Reflections for Police Officer Robert Buitrago

I had the opportunity of doing Robert's background investigation upon his application with our department. I remember the day he came to do his physical agility test. He ran the required mile and a half in almost record time....then he ran it again with some of the slower applicants encouraging them not to quit...to keep going.
I also remember that very near the end of the application process, Robert had not yet been sworn in as an American citizen. (Robert was Colombian and wanted desperatly to become an American.) He relayed to me that he was having problems with his naturalization process. I enlisted the help of a NC senator and in just a very short time, Robert was showing me his certificate saying that he was an American citizen. I'll never forget the big smile on his face.

You did not perish in vain. Instead, you were chosen to watch over those who will continue. Godspeed.
