Reflections for Patrolman Martin A. Hanke
Rest in peace Patrolman Hanke.
Rabbi Lewis S. Davis

My Mother was pregnant with me when my dad, Martin Hanke, died. Although I never knew him personally, the stories told by my mom, his family and friends, made him real to me. I have always been proud that he lived a life dedicated to others. It is heartening to know that he is not forgotten even today.

First off, I know in my heart that you, Officer Hanke, made it straight to Heaven. I'm sure your wife has since joined you and brought you even more comfort.
As for the recruit, I hope and pray that he could deal with this tragic mistake, for that is what it was, a mistake. I have no idea if the man made it to the Police Department or was fired or quit. But to have to live with this horrible event could leave anyone shattered. I pray he pulled through.
Patrolman Hanke, you died doing your job. A horrible accident ended a career which could have been great. I pray for you and your soul and I hope and pray that you are Resting in Peace and that your descendants know who you were and what you stood for.

I said a little prayer today for Patrolman Hanke and his family. He may be gone but never forgotten. He will always be a New York HERO.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 77th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
