Reflections for Police Officer Guy Patrick Gaddis

18 years, it still feels like yesterday. I miss you more today than I did the day you were taken away. I've lost touch over the years but I still think of Rose and Steph daily, I'm sure she is a beautiful young lady today.

I will never forget you my brother of HPD Cadet class 148, my co-worker and friend from Southwest Patrol. Hardly a day goes by that I don't think of you and your sacrafice. You are missed. I often think of Rosa and Stephanie and wonder how she is doing. I know Rosa is raising her in your shadow. Until we all come for that final roll call I will keep the faith.

I had the honor of serving with Guy while we were both assigned to FT Bliss, TX. When we at the unit heard the news of his death, several members of the 978th MP Co and myself loaded in my van and drove non-stop to Houston to pay our respects to his family, and to honor his service in the Army and to his community.
Another bright light in this world taken to soon. His humor is sorely missed. RIP my brother.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 18th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer

Time never diminishes respect and your memory will always be honored and revered. I pray for the solace of all those who love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. Your family in in my heart's embrace today.

Rose, thank you for sharing your devotion to your beloved Guy. My son also left an expectant wife and my daughter-in-law is like yourself in that she is an amazing mom who from day one has taught my grandson to love and respect his daddy.

Rest In Peace, Guy.

I remember all the fun times~ How you always wanted to make us laugh! How handsome you were. How you where so sweet and caring. I remember your sweet tenderlove for my best friend Rose. I miss you so much. I think of you daily. Everytime a police car drives by I say a prayer for the officer inside and remember all that you did to protect me Guy. I love you and wish you were here. When I hear "You are my sunshine" it makes me cry. You are so missed by so many people that loved you and still love you.

God Blessed Your family with Steph and she is the most precious gift you ever gave to Rose.

Your in my heart forever and ever,
I Love You,

It's 0224 right now, and I'm in my 3rd week back on nights. I,ve been a solo officer here 25 years. I remember when Guy was killed, the first officer ever slain that I know of here in Bellaire. Guy was transporting his prisoners through the City of Bellaire, and was shot while driving s/b on Chimney Rock Rd. There is a memorial on Chimney Rock here in Bellaire dedicated to Guy, I pass it often while on patrol. Tonight, I lit it up with my spotlight, and it shined bright back at me. I left my spotlight on, and stopped to pull some grass away from the stone marker bearing your name. I never met you, but felt you with me right then. I believe in angels, having had some close calls over the years. I felt compelled to pull over and type this message, sitting here in my unit. GOD bless you Guy, and your family. Thank you for your service, and thank you for watching over us all. 301

I knew Guy from my time at Fort Bliss and the Gulf War. He was a phenomenal person and was an inspiration for me and many others. He always was able to get a laugh out of you and kept you in good spirits during bad times. I am truly honored to have served in combat with him and we all miss him dearly. I would love to hear from Paul Bartlett or his widowed wife, Rose. I work for the McKinney Police Department in Texas now and my email is [email protected].

Gaddis was a Soldier that would go the extra mile to assist another. I will always remember him as the happy to help lets get it done type of guy. No complaints. We really lost a good one.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.
