Reflections for Detective Charles Dewitt Hammond
My mother, Shirley {Hammond} Carlson was the granddaughter of Detective, Charles D. Hammond. Her father was his son, Charles Douglas Hammond. She shared his heroic encounter with us kids many times over the years and brought us to see his gravesite. I have always held him in such high regards for his bravery and always felt honored to be the great great granddaughter of a hero. Looking forward to meeting him one day in heaven.

I am Det Hammond’s great grandson. His daughter Ferol was my grandma. Her first child was Jane who is my mom. I'm a US history teacher on Utah, and share this story with my students. It teaches them to appreciate your ancestry. I have had the privilege to take my children to his lodge and gravesite. What an honor to have such a courageous grandpa.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 89th anniversary year of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

I was checking on the internet about my grandfather, Charles Dewitt Hammond. I am the youngest child of Charles Douglas Hammond, along with one living sister, Marilyn Hammond Wever. We are proud of our grandfather, and I have visited the memorial statue in Muskegon just last year.
I heard about him all my life, and would have liked to have met him.

I am also his great-great grandaughter. Such a small world! It is a neat story, although sad that he left behind family members too soon.

Although I will never know if I ever would have had the chance to meet you, just knowing of you has been a sense of pride, and even though fate never allowed us the opportunity to meet, the stories and your memory will live on forever in our hearts and in our minds.
