I knew Curtis since we were 8 years old. We both planned on joining the LAPD together. Unfortunately I passed all the entry qualifications but failed the eye exam. We remained best of friends until his passing. Curtis was also Best Man at my wedding. I still miss Curtis & think of him continually.
Was not a peace officer

Curtis/father
It has been now 33 yrs since your passing, but l can still remember it like it was just yesterday, yes it was a Monday morning march 10,1980, you left the house early to go on your pursuit of a bank robber, sadly enough you did not return that day. You will be remembered by all, including most your son, your daughter and wife and all immediate family as well. You where a good father, a Great seasoned detective who was chosen to be in one of the best units in the LAPD. The SIS unit was considered Top notch only a few men who show excellent ability in there duty as a law enforcement officer even have the honor of being chosen to enter this group. May you rest in peace, one day we will meet again, and you are in my prayers daily, not one day goes bye l don't think or remember you, you where a good man who's life ended suddenly at a young age. God Bless you and may you be in peaceful place.
Love,
Your Wife, Son @ daughter

You were a "Cops Cop" & an awesome S.I.S. Detective. I will always treasure the 4 years I worked with you in S.I.S. before were taken from us so prematurely. We had some great times in those 4 short years. Rest in peace "Prince Valiant" & until we meet again.

Detective Hagele - I was only on the job for a little over three years when you were killed. I caught the news and was incredulous that it was an accidental shooting by another officer which felled you. Today, 30 years later, I can still recall Lt. Chuck Higbee giving the news briefing with tears in his eyes. Sir, you were...make that you are still 1 of 48. Few outside of LAPD know what that means. It means you are one of the best to do the job. I pray that you are resting easy while keeping an eye on us, nudging us at the appropriate moment to be sure of our target and beyond.

I will never forget the day Curt and I ran into each other at Van Nuys. Curt was working an assingnment. He looked exhausted. I asked him how he was doing, and he replied, "just trying to make through the day man"
The next month Curt was killed. The news of his death devasted me. It hit me like a rock. A more honest and honorable will not be found.
Immotality lives in the minds of those who remember.

My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Special investigation section is still going strong, maybe under a different name but still the same. You have my deepest respect and honor, not only did you serve LAPD well, but the accomplishment of making it to SIS is incredible. You are missed by all that knew you, I did not get the chance to meet you, but you live on in all of our hearts.
