I can only echo what my beautiful sister-in-law, Patricia, already voiced so eloquently. She and Ian, along with Mom and Dad and all of your family members, are living your legacy. Your aunts and uncles and cousins across the United States remember you daily . . . you are always alive in our hearts. I remember you as my "perfect" baby brother, I remember you as a kid playing King Herod in the church play and your sweat bands showing under your costume, I remember you as a junior high kid thinking it was great fun to tag along behind me one weekend in Austin on the UT campus, I remember you as an outstanding high school athlete that others admired, I remember you as a young man proudly finishing the police academy and being too young to buy bullets without Dad's help (you were 20), I remember you as a handsome and happy groom on your wedding day, I remember you as a doting and adoring father of your baby son, I remember you bursting into our house in Pasadena (never quietly) with big grins and boisterous laughter, I remember you loving the holidays and always caring for all your family, I remember the officer you became and the pride you took in the department, I remember it all. And when I look at Ian, he is you in so many ways all over again, Les. We miss you and lovingly look forward to the day we will all be rejoined together in Heaven. You left a legacy - a legacy of which you can be proud. You remain alive in our hearts and we will always love you.

You are a man who knew how to give enough love to last a lifetime. Thank you for your love and our son. He has grown to be so much like you, and has inherited your many gifts. You are our hero for so many reasons.

I miss you.
I love you.

At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer.

Today, November 5, 2005 we dedicated the shift to the memory of Patrolman Leslie Ian Early who died in the line of duty on this date 12 years ago.

When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.

Patrolman Early’s sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Les Early was a family man. He had three families, all of which loved and respected him.

He had his first family, Patty and Ian. He was everything to them, and they were everything to him. Anyone around them for more than 10 minutes could see that.

He had his extended family, which included his paternal family and Patty's family, as well. At every family gathering, Les was always involved and the center of attention. Not because he tried to be, but because he was a magnetic type of person. He was always ready to pitch in and work, and was a joy to be around.

His third family, the law enforcement brotherhood, knew him as a loving and caring brother, someone committed to the cause of right and good. He gave tirelessly; teaching, putting on events to buy equipment, assisting other agencies in their efforts, and anything else that would make the job safer and more successful for his brothers and sisters wearing a badge.

Les died like he lived, giving of himself when someone else was not available to do the job. He is an example and inspiration for anyone who knew him, and I will never forget being even a small part of his family. It will always be an honor to have him as a friend.

Rest well Les.

I am the younger brother of a friend/fellow police officer who was friends with Les, and we visited his grave the other day. "Les is gone but not forgotten".

Hey Les,
I just wanted to drop a line in here to let you and others know I haven't forgotten you. I think about you all the time. If there's training going on, I'm thinking about you. It's so easy to recall the good times we had and it always brings a smile to my face. You will be glad to know your team is still rocking right along and doing their best to pass on the training you were so instrumental in bringing about.
Your Bud,

I attended the Pasadena Police Academy with Les, and spent several years working with him.
There is not a day that goes by that I do not think of his life and his tragic end of watch.
I am better for having known him.
I miss him.
