Reflections for Detective Willis Henry "Bill" Gravell
I woke this morning at exactly 9:40, the time 35 years ago that Juan Lucero Escalante took your life. I wish I could speak to you to tell you I learned from Sheriff Estrada in Santa Clara County (Nogales) that they have issued an arrest warrant against him for a cold case homicide done just before his path crossed yours. I can’t believe that much time has passed and I still miss you every day. (“You are always on my mind…”)

My darling, Bill, while it’s been 34 years since that terrible morning, there are very few days I don’t think of you. You were my love, my husband, my partner, my friend. As the last song I played for you says, you are Always On My Mind.

I personally didn’t know him well but my husband did and how hard he took Bill’s passing. RIP. He still talks about you, Bill.

I served with the Boulder County Sheriff's Department with Bill back in 1975-76 time, he was my partner on the shifts, I too remember that Texas drawl, but most I remember his love of his family and the job. We ran rotating shifts so we worked swing, days and nights. I remember his stories, his kindness, and one instance stood out on my mind, my son was about 11 and was home from school but my husband hadn't arrived and my son was anxious and scared (my husband was in charge of a halfway house) and our shift was over, Bill stayed after shift and talked to my son on the phone until I could get home which was about 20 minutes, by the time I got home all my son said was "Hi Mom, Bill is telling me some great stories about being my age in Texas, he saw a rattlesnake." Thank Bill.

Tim,
I thank you with all my heart for the reflection you posted about Bill. It will be 25 years on the 28th of this month. He was a wonderful man, a dedicated officer, and the love of my life. I still have some of the case report tapes he dictated but, even without them, I too can close my eyes and hear that Texas drawl and remember his laugh. I thank God for the gift of those years we had together.

Bill,
I was the last person who you talked to those many years ago. Not a day goes by that I do not think about what happen. I was a mere 20 year old dispatcher working my 1st real job. I grew up very fast on that day. I can remember your voice like it was yesterday. Victor 42 I answered.. I will be out on the east end on Desert Sky with a possible.......

Having worked at the BCSD, I tried to think if our paths had crossed. I cannot remeber if I had the honor of meeting you.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I didn't know you, but you were one of those many in Arizona who kept us safe when we visited your state. Thank you for that.
