Reflections for Detective Evelyn Gort
It's amazing how many years have gone by since Evelyn's life was taken. It was 31 years ago today, a day I will never forget. As I have commented here over the years, her picture is on display in my office room. I see it virtually everyday. Her memory will always be in my mind and heart. She touched so many live's in a positive manner when she was with us. May she continue to rest in peace..

Although I never had the honor of meeting Detective Evelyn Gort, her legacy continues to live on in the hearts of those she served and the countless lives she touched. Detective Gort was tragically killed in the line of duty on October 30, 1993, but her impact remains ever-present, a symbol of bravery, sacrifice, and dedication to justice.
Today, I have the privilege of working alongside K9 Evelyn, a two-year-old English Labrador named in honor of Detective Gort. In her short time with the Miami-Dade Police Department, K9 Evelyn has become a source of comfort, love, and healing for so many. Her gentle presence embodies the compassion and care that I imagine Detective Gort brought to her own work, and in her own way, K9 Evelyn continues to carry forward Detective Gort's legacy of service.
K9 Evelyn's ability to connect with others, offering solace and strength, is a powerful reminder that even in the darkest moments, there are lights that shine on. Her name serves as a tribute to a remarkable woman who gave her life in service to the community, and it is deeply moving to witness the love K9 Evelyn brings to those around her—just as Detective Gort surely did in her lifetime.
Detective Gort may no longer be with us, but her spirit endures, and through K9 Evelyn, her name continues to bring hope, healing, and unity to our community. We honor her memory daily, and I am grateful to be a small part of that legacy.

Evelyn was such a positive and vibrant "force of nature". I had the chance to dance and cheer with her for the annual MDPD Pig Bowl games. I clearly remember her teaching us dances, with her smile, laugh, jokes and truly caring ways. Those were such wonderful times and beautiful memories. Much love to Evelyn's family. I remember her bringing her daughters to practices. They were both truly the greatest lights of her life. Evelyn, I know that your spirit and beauty (inside and out) must surely live on in your girls.

It's hard to believe that it was 27 years ago today, that Evelyn was taken from all of us who knew and loved her. She was indeed a beautiful person. I remember having lunch with her about 14 hours before her life was taken as if it were yesterday, a bittersweet memory. I have her picture on the wall, and see it almost everyday. As I type this message I glance to my right, I see that picture in her uniform as she smiles at me in front of the American flag. In my mind and heart her memory will never fade... Rest in Peace my Dear Friend.....

I had great respect and admiration for Detective Evelyn Gort as a person and a Police Officer, she was an AMERICAN HERO. I pray for Evelyn's family and that they have some solace in knowing that she was loved and respected by her fellow officers. With all going on now I thought of Evelyn. A beautiful funny popular cheerleader who always had a smile on her face. I remember her mainly with Julie Cooper and Lauren Matthews. Full of enthusiasm. I also knew Mike Brownstein. We were all just high school kids having fun back then. I knew Evelyn was going to have an amazing life. We all grew up and moved on and away. I remember the news coming on and seeing Evelyns picture. Right away I thought in my head that police officer looks just like Evelyn Gonzalez, but no it can’t be her, she’s not a police woman. She has a different last name. But I knew her face. I knew it was her. I got chills and cried. It was a shock. Everyone from Southwest who knew her knew she was a ray of sunshine. Hilarious. Happy. She lit up the hallways. She spread spirit throughout our school. I think of her now. And smile. Because she always brought a smile to all our faces. And I feel pride that Evelyn chose a career in law enforcement and her life had so much meaning. All police should be respected and appreciated for putting their lives on the line. Evelyn paid the ultimate price. I hope her daughters know their mom was a blast in high school. She was the friendliest prettiest happiest girl all the time. And she lives on through them. I will never forget her.
