today i took a ride to the scene of the line of duty death of po gilory ess 8. at the time i was 6 years old and i remeber hearing of this when i was a kid. 927 broadway is no longer a sporting goods store its a unisex beauty salon and i might add the area has not changed its a bad area the only change is the 90 pct does not cover the area it is in the confines of the 83 pct. you served in a dept that stood for something and the officers you served with went above and beyound the call of duty like you did on the jan 19 1973. you will always be remebered as one of the real cops who made the grade on ability to pass the tests required to be a nyc police officer not like today where they just fill in the positions and let anyone on the job... you will always be remebered for your sacrifice that you made, the perp who pulled the trigger was released from prison after 40 decades that is not enough but we live in a liberal society who feels thaht a killer should be let free. funny thing the members on the parole board probably was not born or in their crap the day you was murdered. my you rest in peace police stepen giloy ess 8 we will never forget you rest in peace officer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Officer Gilroy,

Thank you, sir, for your courage and service. You will NEVER be forgotten. Today ... justice was not served on your behalf. When a murderer of a Police Officer is paroled, something is terribly wrong. What was done today (parole of a person found guilty in you death)is a travesty but in no way diminsihes your bravery, service and honor.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Courageous, Loving, and Blessed. These are the words that best discribe Patrolman Stephen R Gilroy. It is now 32 years latter, and he is still dearly missed, not just by his biological, family, but missed by so many people that his life crossed paths with during his short 29 year journey here on earth. He is a true Hero.

I can't express how good a man Steve was. I worked with him. He helped teach me the job when I first came to Truck#8 in Brooklyn North. He was a journeyman E-man. He even helped me move into my first home. What a Gentleman. What a tragedy. What a terrible loss.

There is not enough to be learned about you from this Memorial Page. I leave this reflection because your end of watch happened to be on the day that I was born. I was even named Steven on that day. One has passed, one was born. I do not know you, but I will remember you with the obligation and honor of trying to fill your shoes.
