Reflections for Police Officer Matthew Francis Giglio

I was operating RMP 414 on the night of occurrence and was assigned to assist at the scene with the search for Matt Giglio,s killer. The subject and his girl friend had committed a burglary to which Matt had responded. I was directed as a uniform officer to complete an area search of the adjoining neighborhood with CPU (plainclothes) officers. We went from house to house and searched every yard, moving from one direction toward another hoping to force the subject to a point of capture. Eventually the subject was captured. When caught, the subject indicated that he had climbed a tree to hide at one point, and that officers had passed under the tree several times during the search. The subject went on to indicate that had the officers looked up into the tree to find him there, he would have shot them.

I am wondering if Officer Giglio was related to my family. My Grandparents were James and Beatrice Giglio also living in Valley Stream NY. Regardless I wish his family peace and love and to remember the good memories and know that Officer Giglio and his sacrifice in the line of duty will not be forgotten.

The passing of John Mackenzie means that justice has been served. My prayers be with the friends and family of Officer Giglio. I hope that they can find some closure and heal from this tragedy.

To Officer Matthew Giglio himself, many thanks for your service to our country. RIP

Matt was an inspiration. I had 1 1/2 years on at that point and was impressed that you could be a Police Officer and a Medic at the same time. After his death, I made it my goal to achieve that extra training and follow in his footsteps. Thanks Matt! You were taken from us way too soon! Great Cop, Great Medic!! God Bless you!!

There are some things one should never forget and that night is one of them. I worked with Matt in the 5th Pct. I worked a 4x12 and saw Matt in the station house just prior to his going out on patrol in his ambulance. Never thought it would be his last tour. Matt was a good cop, great AMT and a fine human being. A loss to many. We lost too many RIP Matt.

Officer Giglio was my training officer for my clinical rotation to become and Advanced Emergency Medical Technician in 1974. He was a true gentleman and I enjoyed the two days we spent together. Also, as a resident of the Fifth Precinct, it gave me and my family great comfort to get to know one of the dedicated officers who put their lives on the line for all of us. I will remember his forever. May he rest in eternal peace.

Cousin Matt you were remembered again today at the NYS FOP Memorial Ceremony in Hicksville, NY where your name is inscribed on the Memorial Wall. Then again, you are remembered often within the NCPD family. You where shot when I was a rookie, never giving us the reflections of our family and the job. You are surely missed and remembered by many.

I'll never forget Matt and the night he was shot. We searched throughout the night and knew we had McKensie, (the shooter) cornered. He took aim at least twice more during the night but new his weapon discharge would expose his position hiding up a tree. Matt suffered before passing and Mckensie should die behind bars for what he did that night.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 36th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

I pray for solace for all those who love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. Time never diminishes respect.

As many other Officer were I was worked that shift that night (in the Sixth Precinct). When the initial notification came over, all other radio traffic was cleared and we listened very intently and prayed he would be allright. My residence was about One (1) mile from the scene. My wife called me while I was on duty scared and concetned about all the sirens and lights. I told her what had occurred and told her to ensure the doors were locked and to have my "off duty" weapon ready. A few days later I remember the public's outrage and anger of what happed and wondered why we "brought him in alive". Remember the funeral and the eulogy. GOD BLESS MATT
