Reflections for Police Officer Ray Pierce Gallimore
Officer Gallimore lived accross from us in the trailer park where my brothers & sister grew up. He as kind & always waved and/or had a smile for us.

Police Officer Ray Pierce Gallimore was my father. I was 5 years old when I lost him. Over 40 years later, the pain is still so real. He will always be my Hero! He gave the ultimate sacrifice and I will forever love him and hold him close in my heart.

40 years approaching next month. Ray we worked the same shift for Lt. Billy Blake and Sgt. "Shotgun" Davis and the shift was as tight as any shift could be. Everyone had each others back no matter what went down. I had moved to Oregon and was on the Hood River Police Department when I received the news that you had been murdered. I am sorry I was not there for you. I suppose we are all in retirement now or have joined you in the streets of glory where your watch never ends, because we all know this is the short life. I think about you often Ray and wonder what would have been if I had been there for you. Keep the faith until we meet again.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 37th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
I pray for solace on this day for all those who love and miss you.

As the Chesapeake Police Department moves forward into the new century, we look back on our past. Soon we will be celebrating our 50th anniversary in 2013. None of our officers were serving in 1974. We are a young department, however we never forget the officers , who came before us. We honor Officer Gallimore and the ultimate sacrifice he made, as if it happened today. Our badges are draped and our thoughts are of him.

As my career's end is coming closer, I decided to check and find those who had lost their lives during the month & year that I was hired. While it's been many years since your passing, I'm sure those you left behind and those whom with you served with distinction have kept you alive in their memories. Thank you for your service and for looking out for us who continue in our chosen profession. Rest in peace Officer Gallimore.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

After more than 30 years Ray is still thought of by many on the Chesapeake Police Department and elswhere, as are all officers that are slain in the line of duty. Details sometimes blur but the sacrifice made by these heroes will always be remembered and felt.
