I have been a USPO for the last 19 years. I have long been familiar with the circumstance that led to your sacrifice. I like many before me has visited the national memorial of LEO to purposely find your name engraved in honor. Your life and sacrifice will always remain a part of our federal probation system. Your service and sacrifice continues to contribute toward change that incudes safety training. You will always be remembered by your fellow officers. May your sacrifice continue to contribute to changes and safety of others who are devoted to justice. May you rest in peace and may your family always feel your presence.

Thank you for your service sir. I was somewhat familiar with your story somewhat since the early 90s. I came across a rerun of Real Stories of The Highway Patrol. The offender was truly a disturbed individual. Thank you for protecting this world from such people.

I just want to thank Mr. Gahl for making the ultimate sacrifice. I learned of him in my Blue Courage training thru San Diego County Probation. Only a few are called to this profession, but many appreciate the chosen. Rest easy in Heaven surrounded by God and angels.

I "grew up" with Tom in Valparaiso, Indiana. We played baseball, basketball and football together in junior and senior high. i was with the US INS as a Criminal Investigator out of Hammond and on "Detail" in Indianapolis in 1980 when i realized Tom was also in the building. We got together for coffee every day I was there to talk about and remember our days in Valpo. He did everything right and was a true American Hero. He was "The Real Deal".

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 26th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

I started as a U.S. Probation Officer in the Southern District of Indiana (Indianapolis) in 1983 and was a co-worker of Tom’s until I transferred to Arizona in 1985. It is true what they say. Tom was a great person; a real gentleman and a very good USPO. Also, Tom was very nice to me (the new guy).
Additionally, I truly believe part of Tom’s legacy was the recognition that Federal Probation and Pretrial Services Officers deserved a proper safety program. It didn’t happen overnight and the journey continues, but officers do now have the benefit of training and tools that Tom didn’t 25 years ago on this date.
I remember you, Tom.

PO Gahl,
Something made me turn to this website today. It is hard to believe that 24 years have passed since I responded to your crime scene. The madness of that day has never left me. I will always be humbled by your courage and the sense of duty that showed that morning.
I hope that your family is well. Godspeed.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I had the pleasure to meet Officer Gahl's son, Christopher.
How proud this man would be of his son. His son is such an incredible, nice person. Although, Officer's Gahl's life was cut short, he left behind a wonderful family to carry on his legacy. Officer Gahl's memory will go on and his friends, family and community will not forget what a great loss this man is to our society.
