Ninety Five years ago, on Dec. 25, 1918, my Great-Grandfather, Patrick J. Gaffney, died as the result of the gunshot wound he received during his service to the East Cleveland, Ohio area. Yes, it was on Christmas day which was also his wife's birthday! So, so sad!
He left his wife and his four children, all under the age of 10 years old, to carry on. Their lives were forever changed and the affects have lasted for generations. Sadly, this happened at a time in our history when there was no Social Security or government benefits for the remaining family. My Great-Grandmother did everything she could to raise their four children the best that she could. She is one of my hero's!
Patrick Gaffney's life was cut short but his memory has lasted. I'm thankful that my children will know him through our family history and wonderful websites like this!
