Reflections for Police Officer Scott A. Gadell

Yesterday I ran the NYPD Memorial Run for all fallen NYPD Heroes. When I went to pick-up my number I was asked if I would wear the name of an officer whose name had not been picked yet. I certainly agreed. When I got home I wanted to find out about P.O. Scott A. Gadell, whose name I wore proudly on the on the back of my shirt. So I googled him and broke down crying as I read the numerous articles regarding the circumstances surrounding his death. PO Gadell served with valor and I honor someone who I never met but whose legacy lives on.

Scott,I remember well the events that led to your death.I can recall thinking it could have me or anyone else in your situation.Combat reloading an out dated .38 while under extreme fire from a perp with a semi automatic 9mm. The Department's answer was to allow speed loaders for the .38.It wasn't enough and it was too late. The NYPD has since long received the 9mm,It was part of your legacy that made the NYPD the Finest that you yourself represented.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I had two years on when you were taken away from us. I recall being extremely sad, and I felt as if my own brother was taken away. When we wear blue, we wear it together, and when one of us dies, it tears a hole through us also, and a part of us dies too. You are a hero Scott for the tremendous job you did. I have not forgotten your name, and it will live on within me forever. You are a hero, and like many of our fallen hero's, and Heaven is filled with many angels on the job. So, rest in peace, and God bless you, and your loving family.

the person that did this to this officer should have been executed in public. but we let these liberal losers tell us what to do and we don't fight back. where is our sense to realize if we were not around they would be constant crime victimms, and we just take it we should have walked out for two days to teach them a lesson

When Scott was killed a part of all of us was taken, those who were working at the time realized, this could have been anyone of us. G-D bless you Scott.

Scott, your ultimate sacrafice did not go in vain. It ultimately caused agencies across the nation to make the transition to hi-capacity pistols. May you rest in peace and be assured your sacrafice has saved lives!

I worked with Scott during my time with the NYPD. He was a great guy who was quick with a joke and was always available to help you out....Scott, you are missed and thought of often.

Scott was in my squad when he first became a cop with the Housing Authority.
We shared many laughs together.
I would like his parents and family members to know he is thought of often.
Scott was a great guy, taken from us much to soon.

We were all effected by Scotts death, especially those of us with similiar time on the job, and close in age, you will never be forgotten.

Scott, it's been many years since that fateful day in '86. But you are still in my thoughts and prayers always. Remember always "In Valor, There Is Hope - Tacitus". Andrew

Scott was a very nice guy who left us way too soon. He worked as a janitor in my school while he was waiting to go on "the job". His brother Jeff was in my class. Scott switched shifts so that he could be off on 6/29 to attend our graduation from High School. I have never forgotten him and will keep in my prayers forever. He made the ultimate sacrifice and our town is very proud of him.
