Reflections for Officer William M. "Mike" Freeman

I was a motor officer with the San Jose Police Department when this double murder of the two CHP officers occurred. On the day of the funeral, Dec. 26,1978, I and SJPD officer Duncan 'Buc' Demers rode up from San Jose to attend the funeral. There were so many officers inside the church that we stood in ranks on the street outside during the service. It was bitterly cold and foggy. A very solemn day.

Working everyday out of Woodland Area (280) from 1983 to 1997. Upon arriving I got to meet the “brave officers” that continued “to Protect & Serve” the motoring Public… the Officers that stood watch on Area 280 during that “Faithful Day” !
Even though I wasn’t there on that day.. (I was in the Graduation Class CTC 4-79) the Men that were, shared with us the stories of what had occurred and how “Brave” everyone was when they heard what happened that nite
They continued protecting the“ motoring public !”
As a young officer, it gave us a sense of
“Responsibility “… to keep ourselves “ safe” “so we can help the motoring public .
It was an “ Honor to serve the motoring public of the State of California “!

Now that I am retired and live in Nevada, when I come back to the Bay Area, I always think about them, when I see the sign with their names, I remember when they were killed, because I was a new Officer in 1978. I was lucky that I made it to 31 years in San Francisco Police Department and 3 years with South Lake Tahoe Police Department.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 33rd anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

I pray for solace for all those that love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. I hope one day to meet your family at a NORCAL COPS function.

Though I never knew him, he was part of my Law Enforcement family and I will mourn this deep loss the rest of my life. My heart aches with all the losses we have suffered, and continue to suffer, through the years. God is our only peace in such incidents & our only real comfort comes from Him. May His strength, comfort & peace continue to be the sustaining force in the lives of all who knew this beloved officer; and may it somehow help to know that, even after all these years, they do not grieve alone.

Mike:
It's been almost 29 years and seems like yesterday that night it all happened. Not a day goes by that I don't think of the good times we had together. I still miss you tremendously.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.
