This was my hero. My idol. My best friend. Oh, and my dad. Hard to believe it's been almost 39 years since he left. For me it's always kind of felt like yesterday. In the months before his death we would play games every night. Stratego and chess for money. It was during these games he taught me his wisdom. Logical thinking and strategy. We were in the middle of a stratego game when he was called away that night. The game remained there for two weeks after he had gone. I kept thinking it was a dream and he would be back to finish. He probably let me win most of the time but he did tell my mother to pay me the 20+dollars he owed me before he died. The night he died was like yesterday to me. I was awakened that night. I sat up in bed and looked around and listened. All was calm and quiet. Wasn't sure what had awakened me. After a few minutes I laid back to sleep. A short time later I awakened to the phone ringing down stairs. I sat straight up ,knowing what the call was, and waited for my mom to answer. Her cries told me what i already knew but I also knew what had awakened me a short time earlier-his spirit telling me goodbye. I love you and will always remember you as my hero, my idol, my friend, MY DAD!

My reflection is of a brother and friend who was loved by all. A really decent person. Funny, witty in a sly kind of way. My "spades" partner. Fun weekends visiting here in Florence before I moved here. Someone with a great heart for others, yet shy in a way. You helped coach teams with predomiately Mexican kids, as well as involved with local ones. An avid Angels fan, while some of us were Dodgers fans. Yep, my big brother, caring and funny with deep feeling of responsibility for family. Died at 40. Way too young. Your birthday is coming up. Always miss you.

Dad, it's been 37 years almost since the night you left our game of stratego. I left the game as it was for weeks after you left. no one will know the loss i felt 6 days before my 15th birthday when you left me. you never got to meet a girlfriend or wife or grandchild. I suffer every day still without your strength and guidance. I have fallen well short of the father and man you were but i keep trying to improve to be a son you would have been proud of. Your always in my heart! thanks for marrying mom. she's always been there for me in times of trouble and stumble. I pray when my time is done that i will be with you again. I love you dad!!!!!!

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 34th anniversary year of your death. I am privileged to leave a tribute to you. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service.
My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.
