Reflections for Trooper Dennis Lavelle Lund

Fellow Trooper,

I never knew you personally. But every time I look at your cross, it brings a moment of silence to mind about the memories and life you have left behind. We can take to hart the valuable lessons we all share and hopefully one day all will care. To all of the men and women who give the ultimate sacrifice to lay down that caring life.

Your memory and good nature will never go forgotten and god blesses your honorable intentions.

I FIRST GOT TO KNOW TROOPER "DEE" LUND WHEN I WAS IN COLLEGE AND WORKING TOWARD MY POLICE SCIENCE DEGREE. ONE OF OUR CLASSES REQUIRED US TO DO "RIDE ALONGS" WITH DIFFERENT OFFICERS OF DIFFERENT AGENCIES, AND WRITE A REPORT ON OUR EXPERIENCES. DEE WAS A TROOPER IN MY HOMETOWN OF GREEN RIVER, UTAH, HAS MY FATHER HAD BEEN. I WAS EXCITED TO DO SOME RIDE ALONGS WITH THE GREEN RIVER PATROLMEN. GREEN RIVER IS ON INTERSTATE-70, A MAJOR DRUG PIPELINE, AND LARGE DRUG SEIZURES ARE COMMON. I WAS STOKED TO GET TO OBSERVE THESE OFFICERS WHO ROUTINELY MADE LARGE DRUG SEIZURES IN ACTION, AND HOPEFULLY OBSERVE ONE FIRST HAND. ON THE FIRST DAY I WAS PUT WITH TROOPER LUND. I HAVE TO TELL YOU, I WAS ALITTLE DISAPPOINTED AFTER THIS FIRST DAY. IT SEEMED TO ME AT THE TIME THAT DEE WAS SPENDING TO MUCH TIME LOOKING FOR BROKEN DOWN OR OUT OF GAS MOTORISTS NEEDING ASSISTANCE THAN LOOKING FOR THAT "BIG BUST". IT SEEMED TO ME AT THE TIME THAT DEE WAS TO LENIANT ON VIOLATORS, TO MANY WARNINGS, NOT ENOUGH CITATIONS. IT IGNORANTLY SEEMED TO ME AT THE TIME THAT DEE MAY NOT BE THE TYPE OF OFFICER THAT I WOULD WANT TO EMULATE.
I REMBER ONE INSTANCE IN WHICH WE HELPED A OLDER COUPLE OUT THAT HAD A FLAT TIRE, BY CHANGING THE TIRE FOR THEM IN THE 100 DEGREE EASTERN UTAH HEAT. AFTER THE TASK WAS COMPLETE AND WE WENT ON OUR WAY DEE TOLD ME THAT THAT TYPE OF ACTIVITY WAS WHAT HE LIKED BEST ABOUT THE JOB, HE TOLD ME THAT HELPING PEOPLE WAS THE ASPECT OF THE JOB THAT GAVE HIM THE MOST SATISFACTION. HE WENT ON TO SAY THAT THE ARRESTS AND CITATIONS WERE ACTUALLY JUST ANOTHER WAY OF "HELPING PEOPLE", BY MAKING SOCIETY A SAFER PLACE, BUT THAT IT WAS JUST PART OF IT. I AGREED WITH HIM, BUT I COULD NOT HELP BUT TO THINK TO MYSELF THAT I COULD NOT WAIT TO RIDE ALONG WITH A MORE "KICK ASS AND TAKE NAMES" SORT OF OFFICER, AFTER ALL, MOTORIST ASSISTS DONT MAKE FOR A VERY INTRESTING REPORT TO SHARE AND IMPRESS MY CLASS WITH.
WELL, I HAVE BEEN AN OFFICER FOR ABOUT FIFTEEN YEARS NOW, I EVEN HAD THE OPPURTUNITY TO WORK ALONGSIDE DEE. AND I KNOW NOW THAT WHAT KNOWLEDGE OF THE JOB THAT DEE HAD TO SHARE WITH ME BACK THEN WAS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANYTHING ELSE I COULD HAVE LEARNED. I KNOW NOW THAT "PUBLIC SERVICE" IS JUST EXACTLY THAT, AND THAT IS ULTIMATELY WHAT WE DO.
THANKS DEE FOR GIVING ME SO MUCH TO THINK ABOUT WHICH I HAVE REFLECTED OFTEN ON THROUGH MY YEARS OF SERVICE. MYSELF AND OTHERS ARE BETTER OFFICERS FOR HAVING KNOWN YOU.

Dee..
I never had the privilege of knowing you but I have had the privilege of working a short time with your brother, Clark. He's a great man and I'm sure you were as well. I was in attendance at this year's peace officer memorial ceremony and I watched Clark's pain as he remembered you and the good things that you represented. Rest in peace my friend...your sacrifice will never be forgotten and those of us who carry on in the brown shirts will keep the watch in your stead. May God be with you and your remaining family and friends until the day when you all reunite again.

Hey there big brother! I am amazed that so many years have passed since the last time we laughed together. You were taken so quickly from us, yet it has changed our lives forever. I think of all that you have missed...or have you? My baby's shining eyes, his laughter - oh how the two of you would get along if you were here! He reminds me of you in so many ways...he will know who you are - I promise you that. Although my new little family does not share the memories that I have of you, you will never be forgotten. You will always live in my heart just as vibrantly as you did until the day you left us. Thank you for your life, your love, and the inspiration you continue to be to all those who know of you and hear of your sacrifice. Dee I am sitting here in my office getting ready to go to the memorial. Time has sure gone by since we last joked with everybody at a family reunion. Chldren are grown, going on missions and getting married and I made it to my 20. There isn't a week that goes by that you are not thought of in some way or another by everybody in the family. Love, your little brother.

Thanks for giving your all 10 years ago. Society is not best served if officers are not allowed to pursue people who flee from them in vehicles. Trooper Lund died while trying to protect others, while many people always think only about themselves. I am proud to have had this hero protecting our nation's highways.

May he forever rest in peace, his killers never walk the streets again, and his family be blessed greatly.

Dee it has been a long time since we worked those shifts in Green River together, I thought about it the other day as I was working in that area.
looking at those young new faces of the new troopers took me back to the day we worked the Interstate.
just to let you know you are still missed very much, a white UHP cross is there at the rest area where you patrolled.
god bless you and your family.

Dee, it has been time now since you are gone. I remember many things about you, but most of all, how kind a person you were. You were a very dedicated officer and have been missed. I remember I story about you that I just have to share. It was the time that there were some officers that had a vehicle full of hispanic subjects stopped and the deputy was trying to get information from them. at one point the deputy said, in a loud voice, is there anyone who speaks english. There was a hand lifted up in the crowd of hispanic people and when the deputy got to the hand it was you. You told the deputy that you spoke english. You wore the uniform with pride and it showed in your work. May God be with you and your family. I am very greatful for knowing you and working with you.
