Reflections for Patrolman Leon Fox
Baruch dayan emet (“Blessed be the True Judge”)
As I spoke to my father, a retired Miami Beach police officer, this evening about the lawlessness we are facing in our country he mentioned Leon. I never knew him nor had my dad ever mentioned him before. He recounted the crime and the eventual outcomes and then he told me Leon was my grandfather's first cousin. I began researching Leon and was very moved by the reflections I found and the articles that spoke of his service to his community, a man of honor and integrity. I found a story that intersects mine. A life taken too soon. Saying Kaddish in his blessed memory.

On July 15th 2019 at 5pm I will be hosting our street co-naming ceremony for fallen Police Officer Leon Fox, and I want to share with you a beautiful email I received from a 92 year old man who remembers Officer Fox from his childhood:
NYC Councilman Chaim Deutsch
“A wonderful tribute to a wonderful human being, who happened to be a great police officer. As a youngster going to PS 225, P.O. Leon Fox would be on the corner making sure that we kids (I am now 92) got to school safely. His smile, his warm greeting, his caring for us and his friendship had a great impact on my life, as well as many other kids. He was our Big Brother.
And I remember the morning when news reported his killing. It was a terribly sad, sad day, not only for his family, for the Police Department but also for his neighborhood family. We lost a hero, a great Police Officer, our Guardian and a Super Mensch.
Thank you for your efforts in making this Day happen.
Sincerely,
Leo Katz”

Leon Fox you were my grandpa's brother and unfortunately I never got to meet you. You were always on my grandpa's mind and he missed you everyday and was very proud of you. When I was little he would tell me stories about you sadly my grandfather passed away when I was still young and I could not findout more about you. But I promise you are not and will never be forgotten. I would like to thank everyone who left their reflections and kind words.

You may not believe it but I remember Leon vividly after all of these years, not his face but his presence, as he always stopped by and spoke to my grandfather & myself when he was on beat on Neptune Avenue which is in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, NY, and is within the bounds of the 60th precinct.
I was a youngster of about 6 years old back then and was in awe of this man in uniform, as most boys were back then when the beat cop was respected & admired by all he came into contact with....sadly unlike today.
I did not understand what death was at that age but I remember that my grandfather cried unashamedly when we were told of Leon's death.
I suppose I could call him one of my boyhood heroes. My only regret, at this age, was that I did not get to know him better.
Rest forever in peace with the Lord.

Officer Fox,
While viewing your sight on the anniversary of your death, I was sad to see no reflections. Although you left us long before my time, you are not forgotten my brother. Rest in Peace.
