With this past week being Police Appreciation Week, I was re-reading the account of my great-grandfather, Sheriff Jay Lemuel Forehand and stumbled on this reflection page. I was touched by those (some who are my family and some who I do not know) that have taken time to honor my great-grandfather for his ultimate sacrifice. I, too, would like to say thank you. I am the granddaughter of Orsdell Forehand. I am also the proud mother of Dhenin Forehand Brock, who is also in law enforcement. I pray daily for his continued safety.

I am just now reading all of your wonderful posts honoring my grandfather, Jay Lemuel Forehand. A surviving family's reflection: my father was Orsdell Haywood Forehand (b. Aug. 22, 1907, d. 1969), the Sheriff's only son (who was only 13 when his father was killed). Sadly, my father never emotionally healed after his father's death - and that is the lifelong tragedy suffered by the surviving loved ones and descendants that the public rarely witnesses. My heartfelt THANK YOU to all of you who have posted wonderful messages. Sheriff Forehand's family is deeply grateful, since the "end-of-watch" grieving becomes the family burden that never goes away. Blessings to all.

I never knew my grandfather only the impact his death had on my father and his life. My brother Jay was named after him as well as my son Jay. Today is May 15, 2013 and the Fallen Officer Memorial Week in Washington DC remembering these fallen heroes. I pray my grandfather rests in peace with no more tears, pain or suffering for all eternity.
