"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I remember John well. We worked together in the same precinct. John was a knock around guy and a cop that you would want to be with when things got rough. We'll never forget him and may he rest in peace.

To the family and friends of this brave officer. I have just completed the new web site for the Fraternal Order of Police Newark Lodge#12 and would like to take a moment to thank all of these men for giving me one of the most spiritual experiences in my life. I felt that each and every one of these officers were at my side guiding me to the completion of the sites "In Memory Of..." page. God Bless and Thank You!

Rest in Peace. I was working with the Marshals, Newark office,
10 tears ago. I heard the call and have never forgottten you. The following poem was written in your honor:

Black bands covered the shining shields.
The legion amassed across the field.
The horses pranced at an impatient pace.
Pain and sorrow showed on every face.

The lights extended as far as the eye could see.
Not in our worst nightmare could it be,
That we would be here, to say goodbye.
To a comrade, who had to die.

Evil has reached out and ripped a brick from our wall.
It has murdered a father, who once stood tall.
In a wave of Blue, we came pouring through
To answer the call for a Hero did fall.

There is not much that we could do.
We have come for your family and to honor you.
There were no mear words, we could say.
But we could come together to stand and to pray.
From across the nation and lands far from our own
We have all come to say, You have not die alone.

John and had been partners for a short time about two years before this
tragedy. He was a great guy who loved his job. I'll never forget they
moment I heard about his death. Of course I was very angry but as I sat
and reflected, staring out of the window in the South Squad, I thought I
saw John for a moment as his spirit ascended to Heaven and he said
"I'm Okay". That relieved me of my anger and I thank God for the peace
that brought me.

I am very sorry to read about Detective Sczyrek's death. It has been 10 years since he was killed, but that doesn't take away the anger that I feel about his senseless death. He took a stand by being a police officer and dealing with criminals who attack innocent people. I really appreciate him for the life he led, and hope his family has been doing well. Rest well and thanks for fighting the good fight, Detective Sczyrek. You've earned your place behind heaven's gates.
