Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Detective John Sczyrek, Jr.

Eddie Lee Oliver lost again as he should have. In a ruling by The New Jerey State Supreme Court Eddie Lee Oliver will not be released because of his illness. The court has seen fit to keep him where he is in jail, for the cowardly act the he perpetrated against you and every police officer in this country.

As I stated in my previous post he showed you no compassion and a higher court has now ruled that he will not be granted any compassion either.

Detective Michael Petrillo {RET}
Newark Police Department

Eddie Lee Oliver, the coward who shot you in the back on June 03, 1993, tried to get a compassionate release due to serious illness, advanced MS. You would have been proud of all the Newark Brothers who showed up to support Cheryl and your daughter. Both active and retired. Needless to say that the release was denied and he will spend the rest of his time in jail, where he belongs. That of course will not bring you back or make it any easier on your daughter, but it will show that no matter how much time passes, you my friend will never be forgotten. I guess Eddie Lee Oliver did not realize that blue lives matter and it was very evident with all the support you got from your brother and sisters officers. Justice was served again today February 14, 2022 Eddie Lee Oliver was denied his compassionate release. He showed you no compassion and in turn the court did the same thing to him.

I was a responding UMDNJ paramedic on that day and recall much of the event. Although we were nearby and had a vert short response time, his injuries were fatal.
I hope the families are doing as well as possible considering the loss. And I hope justice was served.

John, I had a dream about you, me, your brother and a bunch of other friends.
Since that dream, I've been thinking a lot about you and all of the fun times we had.
Time has passed, people have moved on and the memories are all that remain.
I hope you're in a better place and that one day, we meet again.
May you Rest In Peace.

I'm originally from Jersey and I was a senior at Nutley High when this happened. I remember standing outside of the high school as the motorcade passed. Because of the bravery of men like you, I wanted to be a police officer. Time may have passed but I think of you often. Rest in Peace my brother.

It's been 23 years that you've been gone, it's been so long that it seems like another lifetime. I remember when you first came on the job and we rode together for a short time, sort of a break in period for you that was in the South District. We had a lot of laughs during that time you were and still are a great guy even though this is my first post here on your page I have never forgotten you and was present at your funeral, rest in peace John gone but never forgotten.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 17th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

I pray for the solace of all those who love and miss you. Rest In Peace.

John was murdered 17 years ago, well before many of today's Newark cops even came on the job, but we have not forgotten him, or his family. May he continue to watch over us all.

John,
I miss you, I escorted your wife to the trial of your killer. You made me laugh like no other. When we meet again I will remind you of some funny things we did together. You, my friend, really "marked" the "unmarked Car" in the East District!
I have a funny photo of you tearing the pants off of my partner! In the precinct!
