Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Kent Hintergardt
- 1
- 2
I transferred to Southwest Station ten days before he was killed. As a lieutenant I was assigned to plan his funeral. Although strange, I had not met him as of that time. It was an honor to plan his memorial, surrounded by the presence of his law enforcement brothers and sisters. So many RSO personnel stepped up to help with task, which would not have honored him as it did without them. There are so many sheriff's personnel involved whom ate too numerous to recall. That being said, my thanks to them.

Every yr May 9th brings this memory back. My husband worked with Kent Hintergardt. I was a young mother with 2 sm children and could never imagine what his pregnant wife was going thru. My heart still aches for his family. I hope they know his memory lives on.

God bless Kents family and may he RIP. So grateful for his service.
I knew Kent years ago, 1986 I think. We worked at Pavillons where be was usually the night key carrier and I was closing the service deli. Hed page me to make his sandwich cause he didnt like a lot of people touching his food haha. He was a great guy, in fact I almost moved in to rent a room in his La Sierra home when I was having problems and he was trying to help me..as was his way.
So sorry to learn of his passing and the circumstsnces. I am honored to have known him, and glad his memory lives and is honored through the park and memorials.

I took that 911 call that sent Deputy Hintergardt to that call on that day. I felt so guilty for many years thinking maybe if I had asked 1 more question things would of been different. To this day I sometimes still wonder. I'm recently retired from the department and he's still in my nightly prayers as are many other deputies we've lost. RIP Sir.

I used to work with Kent as Vons in Moreno Valley. He was so nice to everyone. The kind of co-worker that everyone wanted to work with. Loyal, funny, honest and a one of a kind. I'm grateful for all the long conversations we had chillin in the parking lot after work. His advice always made sense. He lead by example and although it was sad to see him quit the store it was good to watch him follow his dream. God took a good one that night. Gone but never forgotten.

I too worked with kent at the vons Pavillion in Moreno valley. Kent was a key carrier and I worked in produce. We all had a lot of fun working at the store. He was a nice guy who grew up into a fine man who wanted to help people and make the world safer.

Kent,
Leo Bell and I were both talking tonight about your death and the last time we talked to you, which was at the Southwest Station the day before you were killed.. We both worked for RSO at the time and were in aviation. You and I worked together at the Lake Elsinore station before it split with Temecula. Tonight a San Bernardino deputy was killed, and last week a Riverside PD officer, both by the same suspect. Very tragic, and your name came up. I always think of you when I drive through Temecula. You died way too young. It makes me smile to know your kids are doing ok, but they still needed (and need) their dad. Rest in peace pal.

I'm the person who called 911 that night. My wife, 2 young sons and myself lived below the apartment where the woman was murdered. I met Officer Hintergardt as he arrived and told him what had taken place upstairs. Then the suspect was walking down the other walkway, leaving, and Officer Hintergardt asked me if that was him? I said yes and he told me to leave the area and he would handle it from there. I stayed behind the pool house as he talked to the man. Then I heard the radio in his car and thats when I heard a click and a shot a second later. I came from around the pool house and I didn't see Officer Hintergardtat at first. I just saw the suspect look at me. At that very moment the back-up car was coming around the complex road and he ran towards his car.
My wife and I held Officer Hintergardt until other units and paramedics arrived.
I blamed myself for years for ever calling 911. But as I've grown older, I know now that what life I have, what freedom and protection people have are because of great men like Officer Hintergardt. Men who understand the risk and sacrifice so much so that we can live in a better community. We don't celebrate Mothers day in our home for obvious reasons. We choose to that day to remember Officer Hintergardt and the ones he left behind. God bless them.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 19th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
I pray for solace for all those that love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. Your family is in my heart's embrace. Thanks to your family and friends for sharing their memories and devotion to you through their reflections.
Rest In Peace.

Juan Murray, I really appreciate your perspective on my dad's story. It means a lot to me knowing that you think of him. Although, I never personally met my dad, it is nice to hear about him and learn more about the man he was. I feel like every time I read anyone's story, it gives me insight to his life. That is something that I definitely wish I could have experienced being with him.

I was a Marine at Camp Pendleton back then. I remember laying on the couch with my ex-wife watching t.v. I heard everything that happened that night. Myself and an off duty EMT worker whom also lived in the complex came to aide in trying to revive Kent. I still have a t-shirt from that night that I will always keep. Soon after that night, my tour ended with the Marine Corps and went on to be a State Peace Officer with the Dept. of Corrections. That night changed my life. I'm happy to see that his two daughters turned out to be great kids. If you ever read this, I personally want you to know that your father was a hero and changed many lives while in uniform. I will always have his name and memory with me always. I put on my uniform everyday and I think of your dad and all the brave men and women who chose this career. Thank you Temecula P.D. for your support back then. Thanks to all who protect and serve. Semper Fi.

Kent,
I remember you playing with all the neighborhood kids, and being able to open my combo lock to my bike when I was little kid. I remember you talking to my dad about what it was like to be a cop, as he was watering the lawn. And, I will always remember the day you passed away. My father and our family were in shock as we found out watching TV. There are only a handful of days I had ever seen my father cry, and one of those days was the day he went over to your parent's house to pay his respects. Rest in peace.

Kent, After 17 years, I still remember to honor you. I ran the Peace Officer Memorial with my Academy class (RSO 122) the day after you were killed. As I started my career in law enforcement I carried your memory with me and I'll never forget you and your family. I look forward to meeting you and feel you're watching over us all.

On the 17th anniversary of Deputy Hintergardt's death, we honored his service in our patrol briefing by reading his entry from ODMP. Each day, we honor one fallen officer on the anniversary of their death so as to keep them in our thoughts, and also to remind us of the dangers inherent in our job. Deputy Hintergardt is not forgotten.
