Reflections for Patrolman Anthony B. "Bud" Burton
- 1
- 2
Officer Burton was a D.A.R.E Officer back when thjs tragedy took place! I remember him coming to our school to teach us the dangers of drugs! He was so soft spoken, very passionate for the children of North Vernon. I miss Officers like this, he was honest, stood up for what was right, listened to what we had to say, and responded with the best and most honest response a caring person with a huge heart; could! It's too bad that the our Justice System, in Jennings County isn't full staffed; with officers like this one right here! R.I.P Anthony Burton! Even now, you're very much missed for your service in our sad and unfortunate little community! I just know things wouldn't be the way they are right now, if you were still here in the line of duty!!

I miss him everyday!! He meant everything to me when I was a kid. He took me to Kentucky just to eat at a fish restaraunt. I will never forget going to see Jungle Book at the movie theaters with him. I had to sit on his lap the whole time because I didnt weigh enough to keep the chairs from folding me up in them. And for some reason he would always find quaters in my ear that I didnt know was there. LOL I Love and miss him so much!!

Thank you for being such a great uncle. I have many great memories of you and Diane. I think of you often more now that I am at the age you were when you passed away. I pray for Diane often since she suffered through not only your loss but the loss of Bryce. Thank you for everything.

Thanks for your sacrifice Anthony. You are still remembered and loved. It's been over 18 years now since I got the call that you and Lonnie had been killed yet it sems like only yesterday.
Anthony was my RTO and a totally stand up guy. His sense of duty and committment to the community was beyond reproach. He taught me not only how to perform police duties professionally but how to mix just the right blend of personality, common sense and kindness together with the sometimes seemingly cold efficiency of the law so that a person didn't walk away with the feeling that a police officer was just an unfeeling automaton.
God bless you, you are remembered.

To Anthony and his family and friends:
Today is the sixteenth anniversary of Anthony's tragic death and the day all your lives changed forever. As I read the loving reflections left, I am mindful of the journey we all struggle with as we try to make a life for ourselves...we know that is what our beloved would want us to do, but the heart always aches for the one who can only be with us in spirit for now.
I hope that you all find some peace in your heart tomorrow as you hold your memories like the rare and beautiful pearls they are.
May Anthony's spirit continue to soar and his memory continue to inspire.
Rest in Peace, Anthony. Your valor and dedication and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.
