Reflections for Special Agent Todd Wayne McKeehan

Todd,

Today's the day, brother, 15 years. We rode together from New Orleans to Waco in my ugly, electric blue government Chevy with the pink stripe. I rode back alone and you took a different route home. We met up again in Tennessee. So many people wanted to be at your funeral, they had to open up your old high school gym just to fit everybody in. You looked sharp in your dress blues, and I slipped a Sullivan County sheriff's badge in with you as a memento from your old department.

David and I talked about you all the time, until 13 months later, then he was gone too.

You were an inspiration to me in my career. I think about you, and David, a lot, and often remind my son -- Todd David Hustmyre -- about the two men he is named after. He's got big shoes to fill. Bad news, though, brother, although he's only 11, he's leaning toward the Army, not the Marines. The debate goes on ...

I have every intention of having a cold one in your honor tonight. You'd be surprised, by the way, that after ATF, I ended up a writer. Remember when we shared that first Group III office in the old building downtown, I could barely type and had never used a computer. Since then, I've written three books and hundreds of articles. I've even written a few articles about you and been on TV a few times about the shootout. I get interviewed every so often about it and I always mention you.

I have a theory, you're never really gone unless you're forgotten. So, by that standard, you will always be here.

That's all for now, brother. I must be turning into a sissy. I'm getting all choked up.

I'll see you on the other side. Semper Fi.

Todd was my partner and close friend. I was there when he was killed.

I think about him and our other friend, ATF S/A David Sullivan, who died 13 months later, all the time.

I named my son, Todd David Hustmyre, after both of them.

I'll see you on the other side, my friend. We'll have a few beers and catch up.

Agent McKeehan, today marks the 14th anniversary of your murder at the hands of a group of social misfits. You attempted to serve a lawful court order and met with fierce gunfire. The ONLY persons responsible for the deaths of you and your fellow agents were those people inside that compound and they were the ONLY ones responsible for their ultimate demise. You and your fellow ATF agents are heroes for the risks you took in doing what had to be done.

My cousin is currently an Agent with the ATF and I’m very proud of him and can only say, the ATF has my total respect and I curse those who try to take the blame away from David Koresh and his collection of lunatics for what ultimately happened in Waco and place it on the men and women who were simply doing their jobs, you included Agent McKeehan.

God Bless you and may you continue to Rest in Peace, Brother.

On this the thirteenth anniversary of
his tragic death, I wanted to honor Todd's memory. On behalf of our entire family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you sustained when Special Agent McKeehan was brutally murdered in the line of duty along with three other officers.

This is a pain that never goes away for those who loved and cared for him.

At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer.

Today, February 28, 2004 we dedicated the shift to the memory of Special Agent Steven David Willis, Special Agent Conway Charles LeBleu, Special Agent Robert John Williams, and Special Agent Todd Wayne McKeehan who died in the line of duty on this date eleven years ago.

When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.

Agents Willis, LeBleu, Williams, and McKeehan's sacrifice will never be forgotten.
