Rocky, Like Mike Mauro its been years with a heavy heart that I was not able to write a reflection. You were my training officer when I first got on motors . I looked up to you as a good example of a police officer. In your personal life you were a good husband and a great father. i'll never forget seeing you on your days off with both of your young sons in your arms and i would tell people what a good father you were and still do when i tell stories about you.Donna and I miss you very much. May God be with you and your family. Steve

Rocky,
It has taken me years to be able to write a reflection. A day does not go by that I don't think of you, Judy and your fine boys. You will always be missed. May God guide and watch over your family. I'll see you at the end of watch.

I remembered reading about Sgt. Hunt's murder. As the son of a police officer, my dad of blessed memory was one of NYC's finest for almost forty years. I couldn't believe this cop killer's sentence was lessened. Where is the justice? What are these jurist's thinking about? It must be their own retirements. I believe the sergeant was shot through the eye. How ignominious an end to a life? Now to be taken from his family and fellow officers.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

To the family and friends of Sergeant James Hunt III and his fellow officers with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office:
On this the thirteenth anniversary of
his tragic death, I wanted to honor James's memory. On behalf of our entire family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you sustained when Sgt. Hunt was brutally murdered in the line of duty.
This is a pain that never goes away for those who loved and cared for him.
May you all continue to be comforted and supported by your law enforcement family, and by other police survivors who share this painful journey with you.
James's valor and dedication will always be revered and honored. May he rest in peace.
This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Sgt. Hunt gave to his community and the citizens of Florida, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on February 28, 1993.

Dear Rocky:
I can't believe that it has been over 12 years since you left us. I will never forget the call I got that night saying you were shot. But, as a lasting tribute to you and all law enforcement officers everywhere, I have your name rubbed from the Memorial in Washington, with an American flag folded in a triangle, next to my desk in the Detective Bureau. And, everyday, I look at that flag, the rub with your name on it, and think back to the time you convinced me over dinner at my home to join the Sheriff's Office.
Rest in peace, Rocky

I never knew Rocky but think about him often. His grandfather was a co-founder of the City of Coral Springs. I would often drive by Hunt Elementary School and remember the tragic day. Rest in Peace Brother

I never knew Sergeant James (Rocky) Hunt personally, but having worked as a Reserve Deputy in a neighboring county I attended his funeral along with many thousands of other law enforcement officers from around the south-eastern United States.
His funeral and everyone's outpouring of sympathy and emotions made a dramatic impact on my life. An impact that affected me in positive ways throughout Law Enforcement Academy and into my long nights as a Deputy Sheriff. Without a doubt, the tragic loss of Rocky Hunt has caused me to be more cautious and alert, as I'm sure it has others as well. We will never know how many times myself or other law enforcement officers could have been killed in similiar ways, had it not been for their memories of fellow officers, like Rocky Hunt, causing them to be 'extra alert'.
It is easy to become complacent and comfortable, but each time I call for my German Shepherd, Rocky, I am reminded of the ultimate sacrifice that Rocky Hunt paid to Serve and Protect his community and for that I'll be ever grateful.
May GOD Bless his family, loved ones and fellow officers.
