Reflections for Trooper II Jose M. Cavazos
First I would like to say that not a day goes by that I don't think about you and my brother. I was very young at the time and didn't understand what was going on. I'm now 34 and see how this situation has affected both the Cavazos family and the Weeks family. I can't say enough how sorry I am for what happened, but I do believe that everything happens for a reason. I have been able to take my brothers mistake and use it as motivation to do the right things in life. I tell his two sons every day not to make the same mistake, or to put yourself in a situation that could cause you your life or someone else's. I thank God for leading me to this site so I could pay my respects to the family. God bless you all and may the memory of them both be with us forever!

Thank you to anyone who continues to keep Jose's sight of death refreshed! Jose', our children and I continue to grieve the loss of your life! We live on but thoughts of you are frequent. But be assured we have instilled in your grand daughter the special person you were. When she visited me last year, she went home with some of your trinkets. She was thrilled. She asks questions about details of your life.
I always pray that when my steps in life seem unsure, that you are sending me messages from heaven to guide my way!

Pass by this every day - with the U.S. Flag (used to be a Teddy Bear there too - no more Teddy Bear ?) I say a prayer each time I pass this. Glad someone put up a new flag for Trooper Cavazos (the old one was getting badly tattered last year...)

LTC I hope you remember me SFC Reyes , I gave the class speech at graduation (for the above Person). The teachers were Dr. Cluff, and Dr. Fails.Yes we went with Joe looking for topaz and he made a bracelet for my wife out of tiger eyes. What a great guy, at the time of his death I myself was bedridden from a car accident and I saw his picture on TV and wept for days, especially for not been able to attend his services. Jose (JOE) will be missed by many. God Bless his Family and I will always have him and his family in my thoughts and prayers.

Jose and I attended a course at BYU years ago. He seemed to be a really solid guy and we became good friends in a short time. We even went out and mined topaz during the weekend of a two week course. When I went to work in DC he invited me to his home to meet his lovely family and have dinner with them. I know he was dedicated to his family, his job and the nation - The execution of the scum that murdered himwont bring Jose back, but he wont do it again. I still think of Jose and what a great guy he was. We are all poorer by his leaving.

It's still difficult to believe you've left our neighborhood and I'm reminded of the incident that took place as I travel past the cemetery where you rest and of the location where this took place everyday as I go to and from work. Our children played together at school and you were always there for the kids of Nokesville. You maybe gone but you're not forgotten in our hearts and minds and will always remain a friend and neighbor. Gods Speed Jose.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Trooper Cavazos,
On today, the 15th anniversary of your murder, I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for the citizens of the state of Virginia. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy. It took another seven years, but your murderer finally got the justice that he deserved.
