Family, Friends & Fellow Officers Remember...

Kevin was a family friend. I'll never forget the night of the shooting. It was my birthday and I was out to dinner with family. When the news broke of an officer being shot we were so afraid it was our own family member. And although it wasn't our blood, it was you Kevin, and that was just as bad. Thank you and Ofcr. Hey kevin, I remember the time you caught the chicken pox in the academy and showed up to class anyways! They sent you home and you had to start with the next academy class. You took me aside one time and told me to be strong and hang in there. You were a great Christian brother! I went to Compton High with Kevin class of '81. I remember having history together in the 200 building. This man gave his life to protect us. I just returned from the military in October of 1992 and remember watching the news of two officers being shot near Gonzales park where I played baseball during the parks heyday. A few weeks ago I took my daughter to the park to show her where her daddy played little league and noticed that the park changed its name from West park to Burrell/MacDonald park.

I was 12 when this happened, i heard the shots, as I lived a few blocks south of the incident. I saw their memorial in the ground, it should be more of a visible memorial.

I just wanted to thank Mayor Eric Perrodin, Deputy Tim Brennan, and the rest of the Compton PD/Sheriff for keeping my Uncle Kevin's memory alive. The 20 year memorial was beautiful! The fact that you do this with only asking that our families be present shows that these fallen officers were more than just co-workers to you. Each year, this memorial helps to remove the pain of how we loss them, and replace that void with loving thoughts and memories of the great times we all shared. Although they are gone, you do a great justice in keeping their spirits alive. On behlaf of my little cousin Kevin Michael Burrell II, my grandmother, and the rest of my family, WE THANK YOU ALL!! I would just like to say that I have never forgoten OFC. Burrell and OFC. Macdonald. I was in the Fullerton Police academy when they lost there lives. I have always kept them in my mind. I still remember reading the paper that Burrell would always sing "I will always love you". Every time I hear that song I think of Burrell and Macdonald.

I was just sitting her at work and I thought of you today. I remember the days at CSUDH we talked about police work and our futures. I had just been with LAPD for 7 or 8 years and you were finishing your education. I always knew you would be a leader as you were soo excited about your future as a Law Enforcement Officer. Kevin, You were a great friend and a great mentor. I will always remember your smile. I enjoyed your wisdom and let me tell you, Kevin, YOU WERE RIGHT. A COLLEGE EDUCATION DOES PAY OFF. Hey Kevin how are the angels treating you? I went to your grave site on February 23 and and paid my respects to you my friend. Our buddy Deputy Gary Davis reminded me to turn the siren on for you. Remember how you loved the red and blue emergency lights and the sound of the siren. We both agreed that you were smiling when you heard siren and saw the lights flashing on my police car. We love you Kevin and we all still share great stories about you. You are our HERO Kevin. God speed my friend. Continue to look out for us as we stand tall and do our jobs. We miss you Bro... Your heroism and service is honored today, the 16th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. I remember first meeting Kevin when he was a police explorer. I dont think I ever met anyone who wanted to be a cop more than he did! The first time he rode with me I pointed out to kevin that at his size the football coaches in high school must have stalked him like tigers to get him to play! He laughed and said "yeah, but I just wanted to play basketball!" To me, this showed Kevin for what he truly was, a gentle giant. To Kevin's family if you happen to read this, I was once told that many american indians say that a man is not truly dead if there are people left that remember and talk about him. If this is true, he is still alive in the people that knew him! God bless you Kevin, you were a great cop but an even better friend!
