Today, January 31, 2020 marks the 99th year since my grandfather Detective Lieutenant Philip Ellenstein was killed in the line of duty protecting the citizens of the city of Detroit. I alone am left to remember him and the sacrifice he gave so many years ago. He is on the wall of heroes along with so many of his brave comrades of the Detroit Police Department. Faithful to his duty.

Detective Lieutenant Philip Ellenstein was my grandfather and a man I never knew. My mother was only six years old when her dad was taken from her, slain in the line of duty at only 52 years of age in 1921. Although I was never to meet him, my grandfather has always been a hero to me. A room in my home is adorned with the few photos of him that remain and copies of the period newspapers describing his death so long ago. His gravestone reads, "Faithful to His Duty" and his name is on the wall of heros at headquarters. He is with me always.

Detective Lieutenant Ellenstein was 50 years old at the time of his death. His wife, Eva, was 46. They had two children: George H., 19; and Harriet N., 6. The family lived at 213 Delaware Street. Data from 1920 U.S. Census reports.
They are not forgotten.
