Reflections for Patrolman Eddie Ray Duncan

I remember talking to Eddie. Whether it was out on the street or whenever he came in the jail with a prisoner we would chat. I will never forget the night he was killed. Myself along with about 150 other police officers were out till the suspect was apprehended.

Ed,
Here we are almost to police officers memorial week again. 39 years and it seems like yesterday.
Some people probably wonder why I don't move on after all these years my dear brother. My one promise I made you is I would never forget or let you be forgotten. As long as I am alive and able I will keep that promise. Miss you brother.

i was working Communication for the Kanawha County sheriff's Department when patrolman Eddie Duncan was gunned down along with LT.. Delbert Roush was gunned down and murdered during a traffic stop. it was the longest night in my 16 year career.i did what i could to help the Chas Police Department in any way i could and was asked to put out a message that the incident took place while contacting every uniformed unit with the Sheriff's Dept to be in uniform and across the strreet in a parking lot for further instructions to search for the shooting suspect. EDDIE neither you nor LT. Delbert Roush will ever be forgotten. Thank you for your service

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 31rst anniversary year of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

I pray for solace for all those that love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever.

Another holiday is upon us without you. You would think time would make it easier, but is doesn't. I miss you so much at times I ache. You were my big brother and I always looked up to you. Now when I raise my head to look up to the sky I am comforted to know you are up there. I know you and Pam were reunited this year with her passing. I can see you walking hand and hand on those streets of gold. That comforts me to know you are together again.
As you already know God has laid it on my heart to go to the prison and meet the person who took your life so needlessly. Not to give him anything but I feel the need to make him know you and who he murdered that night and all the lives he has affected by his evil deeds.
Know I love you and carry you in my heart daily. Miss you my big brother.....

Ed this has been a hard week in Charleston again as Patrolman Jerry Jones was killed in the line of duty too. My youngest son Tommy, which you never got to met here on earth, was a good friend of Jerry's. I know you have met him this week as he came to heaven with you. Also I have made contact with Roush's family this week so tell Delbert we are going to get gather. I guess you can see Pam your beloved wife is not doing to good health wise. You also have another new granddaughter. Oh how ornery you could make them and love every minute of it. Brother we miss you being here on earth with us but I know we will meet you again over in heaven. Love you, your sister Connie

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Daddy,
Your first grandson was born 9 months to the day of your birthday! How about that! He looks just like you and everybody says he is tempered like you too! My prayer is that he grows up to be the man that you were; strong, honorable, loyal and brave. Thank you for serving your country, state and most of all your family. I love you!

On this day, 29 years ago, you paid the ultimate sacrifice. I am sure your family felt horrible sorrow in your untimely murder as well as terrific pride in your job as a Police Officer. Thank you for bravely and proudly serving your community. You will always be a hero who will NEVER be forgotten!

God Bless You, and give you peace. We give thanks that there are those who are willing to put their lives on the line to protect our way of life. We pray also that others will not be called on to do the same.

I was station in St. Albans as a Army Recruiter when this tradgey took place. After I left the Army, I became a police officer with the Bristol Virginia Police Department and retired in 2004. During this course of time I found out that my relatives were from Dunbar W.Va and had an opportunity to visit the Thurston Cemetery in Dunbar were I first saw the marker for Eddie Ray Duncan. My great great great grandfather Robert Thurston is buried there. Through a cousin, Charlotte Thurston of Dunbar I learn that Eddie Duncan was kin. My thoughts are with his family and I am proud to have been in the same profession as Eddie.
God Bless the Family!

At the time of your ultimate sacrifice for the citizens of Charleston, I was serving as the departmental Chaplain and as a sworn officer with CPD. It was a high privilege and honor to be asked to officiate your ceremony, although very difficult for me. I am with another agency now, but each morning my path to work takes me by the memorial and location where you and Lt. Roush made the supreme sacrifice, therefore I am rememinded each day of my fallen comrades. Your families still remain in my prayers and thoughts even after so many years. Time will not erase or erode your memory, your devotion to duty and the debt society owes to you and the many fallen brothers and sisters in blue. May blessings, peace and encouragement remain with the family, friends and fellow officer in Jesus Name!

My dear brother you are my HERO. You life was taken from you for such a petty reason. That bullet pierced all our hearts that night and the hole will always be within our family. Your children have grown to be fine young men and women that you would be so proud of. You also have a beautiful granddaughter that I know you would have enjoyed so much. Think of you often and will meet you on the other side someday. Love Connie

Eddie,

I was just 14 when you were taken but it was my first memory of a police officer giving his life. My dad knew several officers in Charleston and with the WVSP and you would have been so proud of how your brother officers worked to catch the man who took your life. They didn't forget and I won't forget your sacrifice either. When I get home to Charleston and drive under that bridge and see the memorial plaque I always say a prayer for you. Stand easy bro. You will never be forgotten.
