Jerry, You are always in my heart. You made the ultimate sacrifice doing what you loved - making this a safer country to live in. I was working as Police Officer in our hometown of Dunbar when an Agent came in the PD to conduct your background check. I knew then you would realize your lifelong dream. You were taken from us way to soon. I think of you often especially on you your birthday & that dreadful day! RIP Jerry! I know you & Paul are together once again...

In honor of Jerry's 55 birthday this month...So many years later... he is honored more than ever....because as we get older and due to the internet and old friends reconnecting, his memory and service is made known around the world. To think of what all Jerry could have achieved personally and professionally in the past 25 years is just incredible and his friends wish he was also here to reconnect with. I try to visit his memorial every chance I get when in Miami.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the twenty-third anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Time neirver diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I discussed that tragic day for the less-tenured personnel, during Roll Call training. It is hard to believe that it has beeen 21 years. It is even more difficult to believe that the lone reminder Miamians have of the most-analyzed FBI shooting, is a stretch of SW 82nd Ave between 120th and 124th streets named Agent Jerry Dove Avenue and Agent Benjamin Grogan Avenue.
May You both, Rest - In - Peace, knowing that there are some of us who shall never forget, and we shall continue telling Your story.

I remember seeing the "In the Line of Duty" movie about this incident when I was in college. Having known back then that I wanted to pursue a career in law enforcement, it saddened me a great deal to watch the movie and learn about the fate of these two brave FBI Agents. Agents Dove and Grogan were two brave warriors who gave their lives for the people of Miami and their Country. May God always watch over them as they rest in peace. Their legacy lives on and they will never be forgotten.

Agent Dove,
As I travel to my father's house in West Virginia, I pass a road that is named for you. I have taken the time to teach my fiancee who you were and how you were taken from us, and the lessons that we have learned, that were paid for by you and Agent Grogan. I think of you every day. Rest well.

Dear Jerry:
In April of this year, I brought a computer printout of the shootout to our roll call. Most of the Deputies we have now, we either too young to know of the shootout, or had only heard small pieces of it.
Your death was not in vain, brother, because I reminded our Deputies of the sacrifice you made that day. I was working in the Detective Division then, as I am still. But the news of that fateful day made me ill to think of the sacrifice your family has had to make, but proud of your sacrifice to the people we are all sworn to protect.
I think of you often, and having been in a shootout myself, I can only give thanks to our Heavenly Father for my survival, and wonder why you were not as fortunate. But because of your sacrifice, and that of others, our agency has modernized the weaponry carried, and the training here has become second to none.
For all that, and the dedication, professionalism, courage, and determination you demonstrated, thank you brother. You have done us ALL proud. Now rest in peace and know that you will NEVER be forgotten. God Bless You, God bless police officers everywhere in the United States, and God Bless America.

Our best was sent when you left here and went to the F.B.I. Now that you are gone we wish you had never left. Whenever I meet a S.A. from Charleston they always mention you when the conversation turns to the best of "local law enforcement". We always knew you were, didn't we. Rest easy Blue and Gold Brother.
West Virginia Cop
January 22, 2005
The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.
There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"
