Special Agent Dove,
I recall watching "In The Line Of Duty" shortly after I was married. I still vividly remember seeing the recreation of the shootout on that residential street in Miami. I recall the rage welling up inside as I watched you and your partner Benjamin Grogan being so callously murdered by suspect Michael Platt. You were all heroes that day. You and SA Grogan most of all. Rest in peace. I pray for yours and SA Grogan's families.

A true American hero, it is hard to believe that the death of a man that occurred years before I was born would affect me so deeply. You will not be forgotten

Jerry, I think of you often and when I forget, I see the reminders somewhere on a show or movie of how you were taken from us way to soon. I remember our days together in both junior high and high school. Sometimes you and Bobby M. forgot to study for a test and yes, I didn’t mind helping and the three of us laughing and sometimes cutting up in school. Take care my friend, I’ll be there again sometime.

For some reason I’m thinking of you this evening, Jerry. Remembering our many talks during our high school days. I’m glad you got the chance to do what you loved, but you were gone way too soon. I remember that April day when the news came across the TV. It was surreal. I kept thinking it can’t be true.
You were one of the good guys, Jerry. Still thought of and missed after all these years.

I first became familiar with this incident when I was in college and saw the movie that was made about it. A few years later this was one of the incidents my academy class learned about for training purposes. A few years after that while attending the Homicide Conference my agency hosts every year, I had the pleasure of meeting a Sergeant who was one of the investigators from the local PD who handled the investigation. These two brave FBI Agents and all of the other Agents who were part of the investigative team, surveillance and subsequent critical incident, as well as their families, will always be in my thoughts and prayers for the change their lives took that terrible day and their heroic actions. Thank you for your service and please know that your sacrifice is one that will never, ever be forgotten by your law enforcement brethren. Rest in peace always.

So many years later, right before sleep, I thought of you. It was a memory from the time you pretended to be a drowning victim during my lifeguard test. You were drowning me instead, and the only way to stop you was to reach out and pinch you. You screamed then laughed so hard You stopped the test, but I passed. That year we had such great talks. I can still see that huge grin with you small vampire teeth. Your kind an encouraging way you supported me when I felt alone. I still miss you as my friend.

Agent Dove, I did not know you back in 1986, but I lived in Miami at the time in the vicinity of the robberies and the shootout where your life was taken. I remember thinking then how very brave you and agent Hogan were to confront the evil men that were perpetrating violent crimes on innocent victims in Southwest Miami in those days. I read the biographies of both you and agent Grogan, and I will pray for your wonderful souls tonight. I also pray for the safety and well-being of the many law enforcement officers who protect the citizens of this great and free country. Your service is so greatly appreciated by me and my family every single day. May you, agent Grogan, and all fallen law enforcement officers rest in the peace that you so greatly deserve.

I am nobody special, just a stranger who happen to stumble upon this web page. Yet, despite my not being anybody special, Special Agent Jerry Dove gave his life to protect people like me. Here it is, year 2016, and Sir, the unspeakable grief of his loss was so profound that I, a complete stranger, feel it rippling through my soul some 30 years later.
Thank you Special Agent. Thank you to those you inspired to follow in your foot steps. Finally, I express my profound sympathy to the loved ones who left behind who feel like it only happened just yesterday.
