John T. Donahue was my great grandfather. My grandmother was 10 when he passed. We were always told that he was shot by a drunken sailor. I don't know if it was because my grandmother was mistaken or maybe she didn't want us to have bad feelings about police officers. She passed in 1995 so I guess we will never know. We also didn't know that he had survived for 4 months after the shooting. Thank you for posting what happened happened to my great grandfather.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 88th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
