Sergeant Paul DeWeert was my father.
I was at his side when he passed away minutes after he was shot half a block from our home in North Las Vegas, Nevada. I was 15 year old. A complicated age to lose the guidance and firm hand.
My father, was a tough as nails former Marine Gunnery Sergeant and Guadalcanal survivor. He lived life for his family. His life was second to the welfare of his family.
The important message here is directed to the families and friends of fallen officers everywhere. The difficulties of life after both a personal and very public tragedy will eventually diminish. Life goes on.
To Las Vegas Metro: Stay safe and love your families. This is why you do what you do. Life cannot be the same without you and the job you do.
I can personally tell you that to grow up into manhood without a father to guide you is a very problematic and difficult process. Trial and error is not the preferred method.
To those who were there for us......thanks again.

Casino Security Supervisor

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 46th anniversary year of your death. I am privileged to leave a tribute to you. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service.

My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

My Father Sgt Max I Winger and wife Doris Virginia Winger remember this day as losing the finest officer on the Las vegas City Police Department and also the captain and chief and his partner officer "PAPPY" DeWEERT. He is a hero.. I rememeber as if it happened just yesterday. That was "PAPPY"... my Mom and Dad never got over it. My Father is the number 3 Badge for the Las Vegas Ciity Police. He has since left us, but not the memories of his LVPD and the men that worked the finest,"who's better then you"... noboby.

I was 15 at the time of your passing and never had the honor of meeting you, but I learned a great deal about you from your brother, my father Gordon. He told me about the "good ole days". If only I could have walked in your shadow. Rest well Uncle Paul.

Although I only met you once, when I was nine, you made an endelable impression on me. I was in the Marine Corps, becouse you had been,at the time of your murder and I did not learn of the incedent for some time. I did get the chance to visit Aunt Millie a year later and she took me around town and I met some of the people that knew you. I can only hope that I am as highly thought of after I am gone as you are. Semper Fie Marine
