I and all the children of Howard Phelan, grew up with the highest regard for Jimmy Daggett, whom our father frequently praised and never forgot, and whose death he solemnly mourned again in lengthy discussion about a week or two before his own death. R.I.P.

Time never diminishes respect. I was a very young girl, but still remember the sadness of our family's' loss. RIP our dear Uncle James.

My grandfather Det James S. Hayden 1st Gr. was Det. Dagetts partner along with Det. Howard Phelan, the before this happened my grandfather was pulled off the case and was assigned a IA investigation which was later proven to be unfounded. Safe and Loft Detectives were often assigned IA cases prior to the IA bureau being formed. That day what everyone thought were safe crackers or burglars turned out to be arsonists . After arresting two suspects for B&E and on the way out of the building one suspect wanted to retrieve his coat. Det Dagett and Phelan obliged not knowing incendiary devices had been set in the building. Det Phelan was blown down the elevator shaft and later retired on 3/4 disability pay. Det Dagget I was burned to death and was only identified by his gold Det shield which had melted. My grandfather always felt guilty for not being there as he always told me a child he would never had let them go back into the building. My Grandfather passed the year I was in the police academy and Det Phelan passed in the 90's. The Safe and Loft squad became the Major Case Squad in the 70's

Well done, James. Rest in peace. He is a direct descendant of the original Daggett in America, in 1630.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 62nd anniversary year of your death. I am priviliged to be among the first to leave a tribute to you. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

To the family of Detective Daggett. I was assigned to the Safe Loft and Truck Squad for more then ten years. I had the opportunity to see Detective Daggett's memorial plaque almost every day. I never knew the events leading to his death. He was one of the Finest of the Finest. May God continue to watch over him and his family. He was not forgotten.
