Reflections for Prison Guard Major Joe Crowson

Major Crowson was Known as the long armed man. He was on a horse the morning he was shot. His job was to guard the inmates from running. In those days Men in prison for murder were not allowed to work on outside duties. That morning Joe Palmer and Raymond Hamilton skiped ranks and snuck out to that work team. Crowson was informed after they were out there and he told other guards he would deal with them after work started. Crowson also was a guard when clyde barrow was in jail. Clyde hated major and vowed to kill him some day due to the way major treated inmates. major was going to retire and marry two weeks before he was killed.
he was my Grand father brother. I have paid tribute to him several times in love lady.

I recently watched “The Highwaymen” which is the story of the hunt for and the eventual justice brought to Bonnie and Clyde. This film, in my humble opinion, unlike the previous movies, acknowledges and shows respect for the Law Enforcement Officers who lost their lives to these animals and does not show them to be any kind of folk hero. It was long overdue.

Though the name of each and every Officer is not mentioned, some are and I believe the sacrifice by all is honored.

God Bless you Prison Guard Major Crowson, and may your eternal rest remain ever peaceful, Brother.

It is indeed sad that the names of Bonnie and Clyde are so well known, but not those of their law enforcement and other victims. Also writing to clarify that Major was Crowson's given name, and not his rank as claimed here. He was a regular prison guard, and the Texas Department of Justice doesn't have the rank of Major.

It is so sad that the Bonnie and Clyde Gang are so well known. As a society we glorify the criminals and either ignore Hero’s like you or make the Hero’s appear like the criminals. It is very sad that the names of Bonnie and Clyde are known even to our children, when it is your name Major Joe Crowson that should be known. You are a hero and a man to be looked up to. May you rest in peace and thank you and your family for the ultimate sacrifice. WE are a better people today because you walked among us yesterday. God Bless

Dear: Great Uncle Joe. I wish I would've had the honor of meeting you. I heard great things of you from my grandfather when he was alive. I just wanted to say thank you for your service and thank you for giving your life for our great state of Texas. I would also like to add that you have inspired me to do a job many people would shy away from. Thanks again Uncle Joe for your service. R.I.P.
