Vernon, my dad was with you on that fatal day. Ray Willis. Forgotten? Never. Somehow it makes me feel better to be able to talk. Dad liked you. He wanted to go.he canceled a dentist appointment. Maybe he didn't like the dentist. Either way,it was his choice. Called mom, said he would be late. News reporters showed up at the door before the sheriff dept. notified her. Bad timing. Anyway, rest in peace Vernon. It wasn't anyone's fault. I am sure you were a great man, otherwise, dad would have not liked you. I hope you are together looking down on us. I always felt I have an angel or two on my side. Thanks for listening.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the fifty-second anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
Rest In Peace.

I was a friend of Vernon on the Department. Have never forgotten my last meeting with him near the Hall of Justice. He had just been reassigned to Aero Detail, his ultimate wish, and he was bubbling over with happiness and enthusiasm. I was on for 32 years and never saw anyone so happy over a transfer. Recall the meeting as though it were yesterday. God bless and keep him.
