Reflections for Police Officer William Coleman Cook

A joy that's shared is a joy made double. Karen and you, Officer Cook, my neighbor, friend and hero shared many a wonderful moment. You lived your lives as shining examples of how God's children conduct their daily affairs. You both gave back to your communities in a big way, so not forgetting your sacrifice should be something we preach and contemplate each and every day. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

Look for the good, not the evil, in the conduct of members of the family. Unfortunately, today Officer Cook, some members of your department or other departments have strayed from doing good and this evil has cost people their lives. Your inspiration would do wonders for the morale of the force. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. The conduct of your personal family would most definitely be an example we should all strive for.

If we can but for a moment see our mate as God does, our compassion and love and understanding may be changed for a lifetime. A new view of our mate can only be accomplished as God gives it to us by His grace and that grace is tapped through prayer. You see those of your fellow officers who are in heaven as you, Officer Cook, for making the ultimate sacrifice. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life in such a manner that when you die the world cries and you rejoice. We are all crying over your tragic passing, even as you were a hero doing a job you wanted to do since your younger days. Your loving spirit, Officer Cook, is now and has been since God called you home, continuing to shine down on us as does the spirit of your beloved father, Charles. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. The twenty-five years of your life were testimony of a well organized and a great life lived to its fullest. I still say you and Karen would have made great parents because of your fine upbringings. I miss you and regret never having the opportunity to have known you.

The art of being happy lies in the power of extracting happiness from common things. Compassionate the mountains rise, dim with the wistful dimness of old eyes that, having looked on life time out of mind, know that the simple gift of being kind is greater than all wisdom of the wise. By being able to enjoy quite a few hobbies when not working such as: photography and hunting, this was one way, Officer Cook, you were able to enjoy some of the finer things in life. Your kindness and generosity along with Karen's will always be remembered. Still all the wisdom you obtained can never be diminished. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

The journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. Just as everyone else has done Officer Cook, the journey you took to become a seasoned police officer took a great deal of planning and coordination. Not everyone has what it takes to handle the responsibilities and rigors of the position. You my neighbor, friend and hero had what it took and all the physical and mental determination to make things happen. Rest in peace.

Great thoughts always come from the heart. Communication is the meeting of meaning. When your meaning meets my meaning across the bridge of words, tones, acts and deeds, when understanding happens, then we know that we have spoken and chosen our words exactly as we want them to appear. Just like President Ronald Reagan, may he rest in peace, so too you my neighbor, friend and hero, Officer William C. Cook. were both known as master speakers, capable of imparting what needed to be spoken, how and when. Rest in peace.

A conflict cannot be entered with the idea that one must "win." There is no winning or losing in a good conflict, but breaking through to better understanding of each other. Your calming voice of reason allowed to head off conflicts before they happened. If you were here today, Officer Cook, you would make a terrific negotiator, a community liaison, based on your excellent evaluations you received while on duty. Your humility enabled you to succeed where others did not. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

Whenever we build our lives on values and principles that contradict the time-honored wisdom of God's Word, we are laying a foundation on the sand. Whatever you achieved in this world Officer Cook, was built on the foundation of honor and you knew each night you could sleep on a pillar of integrity for what it is worth. The morals and values that were so ingrained in your being can never be questioned. Your family upbringing was as true as it comes and you'll never be forgotten by me. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

With God, life is eternal-both in quality and length. There is no joy comparable to the joy of discovering something new from God, about God. If the continuing life is a life of joy, we will go on discovering, learning. The quality of your life, Officer Cook, was one that was sensational and very much an accomplished one. I'm sure your loved ones and Karen would still love for you to be here and sharing all the milestones that are celebrated in your family. The friendships that you forged would be increased because of your immense popularity within both your department and the community. We go on learning, sharing, loving and caring because this is what you wished us to do. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

A wise gardener plants his seeds, then has the good sense not to dig them up every few days to see if a crop is on the way. Likewise, we must be patient as God brings the answers... in His own good time. One day Officer Cook, when God is ready, we will know why He calls a wonderful person as yourself to be with Him. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero and know that your very existence was a well lived and accomplished one never to be undone. The seeds you planted in your loved ones will always produce the finest crop there is.

When god gives hard bread, he gives sharp teeth. You always had your eyes, ears and nose to the grindstone, Officer Cook. This is what made you the unique and special individual you were to so many. You pursued and acted with caution when you needed to and were not afraid to take chances. You were as a lion, bold. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

You can learn to overcome the worry of anticipation. After you begin to experience more and more the ready success of divine grace upon all occasions, you will not worry about things before they happen. When the time comes for you to do your duty, you will find God as in a clear mirror and He will empower you and make you fit to fulfill your obligations. I'm sure there were some moments, Officer Cook, when you had worries or doubts as to how things would work out in the end, but you carried on with your daily functions of your position with grace and humility. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up. I'm sure there were times Officer Cook, you had to visit a friend or officer at home or in the hospital and always had a kind word or joke to uplift their spirits. Your million dollar smile could certainly do that. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero and keep uplifting our lives along with your beloved father, Charles.

As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend. As workers who tend a fig tree are allowed to eat the fruit, so workers who protect their employer's interests will be rewarded. Officer Cook, you so valiantly protected your fellow officers, giving up your liberties in the process. There is not a better or more nobler act than for one to sacrifice their being on another's behalf. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

A gem cannot be polished without friction, nor a person perfected without adversity. My uncle Morty, Morton Schiff, of the famous Schiff Jewelers in Passaic, New Jersey may he rest in peace was a jeweler and you my neighbor, friend and hero, Officer Cook, were a diamond in the rough so to speak. You always had the backs of those comrades who faced adversity and when you faced such peril, your friends had your backs. That fateful day, you showed your true class by responding to a call voluntarily and trying to derail a dangerous episode of domestic violence. You will never be forgotten for it. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.
