Reflections for Police Officer William Coleman Cook
Pay attention and listen to the sayings of the wise; apply your heart to what I teach, for it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart and have them ready on your lips. You'll forever be in our hearts Officer Cook, and the magnificence of your character will be there for us eternally to treasure. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. I would expect that when you spoke people tended to gravitate toward you. Your saintly advice will always stay in our minds until we see you and your father, Charles again.

Rather than placing all the emphasis on earthly, tangible treasures, our Lord instructs us to turn our attention to those intangible treasures that defy destruction and cannot be stolen- eternal treasures that keep the perspective clear. The sharpness and clearness of your mission Officer Cook, was to make people's life safer so they could prosper in their endeavors. Your humbleness and the way you lived fit your persona perfectly. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. Nothing can take away from your stellar career and its achievements.

When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise. As easygoing as you were Officer Cook, there may have been times though not too many when you had to hold back on saying a word that might not have been correct. I do not think that happened because of your reputation for proper conduct and speech befitting a veteran officer. Calmness was your way of getting things done right and diffusing situations. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

It's usually through out hard times, the unexpected and non-according-to-plan times, that we experience God in more intimate ways. We discover an unquenchable longing to know Him more. it's a passion that isn't concerned that life fall within certain predictable lines, but a passion that pursues God and knows he is relentless in His pursuit of each one of us. Your passionate pursuit of becoming a highly successful police officer, Officer Cook was because of your desire to contribute to the world in a uniquely positive manner in making us feel safe and secure. God stirred your way as you went through each and every step of the way to gain insight and to broaden your parameters of the challenges that lied ahead of you. Your relentlessness and commitment will never be forgotten. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

God guards knowledge with a passion, but he'll have nothing to do with deception. first Officer Cook, I used the word harbored friendships in describing how you made friends from all over. I believe the proper word I should have used was fostered friendships. God guards your precious soul with all the passion you so vigorously employed. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero with the knowledge that God brings forth to justice all evildoers.

The greatest honor we can give God is to live gladly because of the knowledge of His love. You loved life, your wife, Karen and your entire family and they love you Officer Cook. You happily accepted whatever circumstances came your way. The honor with which you made the ultimate sacrifice can never be put aside. We will always remember your fearlessness. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. The intuition you boldly showed won't be forgotten.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. This is the sole reason why good people like you Officer Cook, pursue careers in law enforcement. A person who is not of sound mind can run into difficulties of which they may not escape. Your intellect taught other officers the proper way of doing things. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

What matters supremely is not the fact that I know God, but the larger fact which underlies it-the fact that he knows me. I am graven on the palms of His hands. I am never out of His mind. All my knowledge of Him depends on His sustained initiative in knowing me. I know him because he first knew me and continues to know me. Officer Cook, you are now being cradled in God's heavenly palms along with your beloved father, Charles. You knew God would watch over you as you performed your solemn duties.

Their Defender is strong; He will take up their case against you. You took up Officer Cook, all of Our Creator's defenses and pursued righteousness with true honor and humility. Your life was compared to building a tower, as high as it may be, the foundation had to start a ground zero. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero, as you now reside in the loftiest of heights, with other angels who took up the same causes as you.

It is a good and safe rule to sojourn in every place as if you meant to spend the rest of your life there, never omitting an opportunity of doing a kindness or speaking a true word, or making a friend. You moved here at age one, Officer Cook, and grew up and achieved success in all your endeavors and always harbored friendships along the way that lasted until your tragic passing. I would think that Karen might still keep in touch with your friends who are able to contact her. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe. Citizens ran to you Officer Cook, when times of trouble were upon them. Your positive attitude and graceful mannerisms allowed you to carry on in a most professional way. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

Regardless of whether we feel strong or weak in our faith, we remember that our assurance is not based upon our ability to conjure up some special feeling. Rather, it is built upon a confident assurance in the faithfulness of God. We focus on His trustworthiness and especially on His steadfast love. A person tries to channel their efforts most of the time into doing God's will. Officer Cook, as one of God's messengers, you chose to train for a position in which you solemnly served and protect people from evil. This message was spread until your last watch of which we are all grateful for your sacrifice and being that special angel who now you assist God as he watches over those in this world who deal with every challenge all too often. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. You were a very caring individual who always went the extra mile to help and assist others. I just wonder how we can possibly ever repay you for your effort?

Do not take overmuch thought for tomorrow. God, who has led you safely on so far, will lead you on to the end. be altogether at rest in the loving holy confidence which you ought to have in His heavenly providence. The mocker seeks wisdom and finds none, but knowledge comes easily to the discerning. Amen to this Officer Cook. Your cunning and wise choices in life got you from point A to point B without many detours. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. Your mind was like a sponge, always soaking up the drops of learning to pass on to those who waited for them.

There would be no sense in asking why if one did not believe in anything. The word itself presupposes purpose. Purpose presupposes a powerful intelligence. Somebody has to have been responsible. It is because we believe in God that we address questions to Him. We believe and those who knew you as your beloved parents did, knew this is what you yearned to be as a youth. Officer Cook, you never let authority go to your brain, thinking you were high and more powerful than anyone. All the training and hard work paid dividends for your future to insure that both you and Karen would have a secure life together and one horrible day that was taken away. You both knew the risks and your courageous sacrifice will stand as a pillar for other officers to look up to. Your heart my neighbor, friend and hero was always pointed in the proper direction, you didn't need a compass to point to you where you needed to be. The special person you were and how you comported yourself is all the evidence of a life that was well constructed.

Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand. Officer Cook, you now stand among God's wonderful beings who so zestfully gave of themselves for others to persevere and achieve. The calling you so faithfully undertook will mark the crowning day when all who knew you will gather with you again all united as one. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

God possesses infinite knowledge and an awareness which is uniquely His. At all times, even in the midst of any type of suffering, I can realize He knows, loves, watches, understands and more than that, He has a purpose. He had you in mind, Officer Cook, your life was full of adventure and the pursuit of happiness with Karen. She remarried and I'm sure there may be moments when she reminisces about you and what could have been. You will always by in our thoughts and prayers as will your mother, Mrs. Julia Cook. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. Your purpose in this world Officer Cook has come to fruition and now your loving soul is the driving force behind each movement we make. It is not easy to be a widow of such a young man like yourself for thirty-years and to then go on ahead with her life.

God has a purpose for your life and no one else can take your place. It certainly has been hard on your loved ones losing you as it was for your department. They all must keep up the battle, the department and your family continues onward with your gentle spirit guiding their every motion. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. You lived your life with Karen well beyond your twenty-five years in understanding and fulfillment.

The awe that we sense or ought to sense when standing in the presence of a human being is a moment of intuition for the likeness of God which is concealed in His essence. The awe that you, Officer Cook delivered daily is one for the ages which we shall not forget. The smartness you possessed enabled you to pursue wisdom and knowledge others could not know. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

Seize opportunity when it knocks, for if it escapes, there may not by another chance to pursue it. You were the first one Officer Cook, who took his chances and seized the moment to make a difference in your life and community. What a difference you made my neighbor, friend and hero. Rest in peace.

It takes wisdom to have a good family and it takes understanding to make it strong. Strength, wisdom and character are the traits by which Officer Cook, you and your family had going for them during the most difficult hours after your tragic passing. We will never really truly comprehend why that young man did to you what he did. Your family will always have that void of losing you and yet they continue carrying on your legacy, demonstrating that a handicap cannot keep someone from accomplishing. Your nephew Justin William Miller, whom I had the pleasure to meet is in a wheelchair and he does not let this affect him from achieving academically. I believe either he has or is working on his masters degree. I gave him the letter which he gave to your mother, who took the time to answer and sent me a very emotional and yet poignant note of you and your success. She was very proud of her son as she called you, "Bill" and "Billy." Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. I try to visit your grave as often as I can and to give back something to the community where we both grew up in, North Miami Beach, Florida.

When they cry for help, I will not answer. Though they anxiously search for me, they will not find me. For they hated knowledge and chose not to fear the Lord. They rejected my advice and paid no attention when I corrected them. You were steady in prayer and devotion along with Karen, Officer Cook. You sought instruction from those more experienced than you. You were not afraid to ask questions and listened patiently to people when they came to you with a problem. A great source of inspiration and achievement are the legacies which highlight your stellar career. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

With God our trust can be abandoned, utterly free, in Him are no limitations, no flaws, no weaknesses. His judgment is perfect. His knowledge of us is perfect, His love is perfect. God alone is trustworthy. We have to trust in God that one day we will see you soon, Officer Cook. But, I do know there are questions as to why this had to happen to such a fine human being as yourself? God has the answers. But, he wants us to ponder and realize that everything He does for us and to us is for the best. He tests us daily to see if we are up to the challenges that we call life. One day soon, my neighbor, friend and hero, God's perfection will be upon us and we will see your wonderful spirit as it now lightens up the world. Rest in peace.

In the midst of the praying, it is comforting to remember that God considers families important, before He called a nation, He created a family. Your family Officer Cook was always of paramount importance to you. Your position as a police officer was a means for you to provide a living for you and Karen and to become a more central part of your community. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

Parents rejoice when their children turn out well, wise children become proud parents. So make your father happy! Make your mother proud! You certainly did Officer Cook on both accounts. Had you and Karen had children you would have made great parents because of your values you both were raised with. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. You and Nancy represent your parents hard work and lovely environment.
