Reflections for Police Officer William Coleman Cook

Honesty and dignity are your best friends, but only if you incorporate integrity into the foundations of your endeavors. All police officers must work together under the parameters of this sacred trust. This was what sustained you, Officer Cook, as you wore your badge and uniform very humbly and your professionalism was outstanding. You became a public servant to fulfill the needs of the Dade County community thirsting for unity, peace and the means for all to succeed at whatever they seek to achieve. You were brave, humane, respected and most of all caring and compassionate. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

The friends you have are the ones you trust. The people we come across in our daily pursuits of life are important to us in that they could be our springboards to success. So one must choose wisely. The Metro-Dade Police Department accepted your application, Officer Cook, because of many reasons. Honesty. Dignity. Integrity. Strength of character and commitment to courage and consideration. No department would have needed to look further, to investigate more. You were their man. You were a top recruit whose perseverance and hard work paid dividends. It is said you reap what you sow. You were valued professionally as a member who got his tasks completed with the utmost of skill and determination. Now your task is to serve Our Creator patrolling those golden streets above where no harm will ever come your way. No more violence. No more hate. No injustice. You were a fair and humble leader who expected others to humbly follow your paths to success in eliminating wickedness from our midst. You sacrificed your life, career and the honor that goes along with serving and protecting, a uniform and badge wore proudly and most of all valiantly. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. I can say one thing, Officer Cook, I wish you were my friend, your mother's letter to me said it all and I'll always consider you my friend, as you went down fighting evil until the very end. No letting your foot off the pedal.

We look for counsel from those we trust. From our humblest of heroes and heroines of the law enforcement community we seek more. When sought after we seek their integrity, honesty and dignity. Though through their bravery and courage are their pathways cut from. Yours, Officer Cook, was molded and shaped by your two loving and beloved parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cook. I want you to know Mrs. Cook, you are always going to be in my heart and prayers and hope you are doing well out in San Diego, California. As you know, it's obvious that I have a deep appreciation for what your beloved and darling son, Officer William Coleman Cook, did thirty-seven years ago for the residents of Dade County. A community where your family lived. Where Officer Cook grew up and served with loyalty, respect and distinction. His tolerance and being able to diversify himself among the residents he proudly and honorably served will never be overlooked. Today, pride and commitment gets lost among deceit and dishonesty. He possessed the right tools with the knowledge and wisdom to inspire other comrades how to properly serve their professional roles. Toughness calls for certain measures. Knowing when to back down. Knowing when to calm down someone whose anger maybe boiling over, whatever the job, he persevered. And to his credit, he in an unwavering manner saved his colleagues that fateful day of May 16, 1979 and those civilians who were caught in the calamity of the wanton violence that ended his precious life and the passions that he still had left to fulfill. He will be remembered as a hero whose strength of character and courage match his valor and bravery. All the purposes behind a treasured servant and a leader as humble as they are. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

To advise is one thing. Advice is what I meant to say and you were a very wise individual, Officer Cook, when giving advice to others. When it comes from a humble servant of God and your police department you were at the top of the ladder so to speak. You were at the top in honor, dignity and integrity in that the citizens of Dade County had no qualms whatsoever with your service and protection. Peace and unity were well spread when you patrolled and it si that way with your heroic legacy it too goes around and is meant for officers who presently serve to follow. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. The words of the wise are meant to be heeded cautiously and with great care. Everything you lived by and aspired to become was accomplished with proper morals, conduct, fairness and consideration for all folks.

It is a good idea to maintain dignity and respect for your teachers. for we do not know when we may need to seek their advice. Advise is an excellent vehicle if used prudently. And when one becomes a leader of others they sure need to conduct all their professional affairs on a higher level of honesty and integrity. Exactly why, Officer Cook, ,you were a very faithful and loyal public servant. Some stray. Some just go through the motions. You went through challenges on a daily basis that were meant to strengthen your resolve. Not many who were as brave and as valiant as you were. You placed class, decency and determination into your position and the badge and uniform you worn proudly and with great humility. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. You stood tall. We hope our legs and feet take us to newer places. Instruction and giving it are reserved for those humble enough to let its messages penetrate their minds.

When the situation became dire you were the right man to go and calm a person. Having honesty, dignity and integrity is important to having success in anything you try your hand at. Stay focused. Stay aware. Let humbleness drive your pathways in life. Your career, Officer Cook, was driven by integrity and bravery most don't possess. It is not in most of us to handle dangerous work and yet this was your dream to go out and make reality happen. Dade County will never forget your heroism. I meant to say you were honored, Officer Cook, for your tenacity and leadership so vital in the pursuit of peace and serenity for all humanity. Men and women of sheer resolve and courage don't come about daily. We sometimes take heroes like yourself, Officer Cook, for granted, that should never happen. You were an honest and dignified officer who cared very much about Dade County and its residents. You dared to make a difference. Your legacy rests upon the foundations of hope, integrity and a certain passion while being compassionate at the same time. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

By the glory of hope. By the tenacity of passion and commitment. Treacherous as those streets of Dade County were during your time, Officer Cook, you did a tremendous job pacifying and influencing goodwill among all citizens. It could only be accomplished through fairness, an open and honest leader of others. Following behind your humbleness and humility which in turn led you to your pursuits in both life and in your professional career one you undertook knowing what might happen. Though you were a fearless and relentless officer who went after evil, looked it squarely in the eye and did what needed to be done. Solemnly saluted and honed for sacrificing and having the cadre to enhance our society and uplift the peace and unity of all mankind. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

The death penalty is supposed to be for people who are found guilty of heinous crimes and sentenced by either a judge or jury. Nowadays, it seems police officers who perform their jobs heroically and with honor are needlessly taken from our midst and their loved ones by wanton violence. You were a good man, Officer Cook, full of integrity, dignity and a loving character to last a lifetime. Sadly, your lifetime ended way too soon. A loss for your family, friends and department while an entire police world suffered too. Your legacy of valor and commitment to excellence fortifies those deeds that you performed and now God has set your soul free to patrol His streets as our guardian angel. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

The soul of wit, wisdom, leadership and knowledge that has been passed down to other brave hearts. This is to be utilized carefully and most wisely. The lives of Dade County residents rely upon them. In a home filled with love and respect, it is no wonder, Officer Cook, as to why you were so revered and adored. It must begin here, just as honesty, dignity and integrity must travel. Dade County and its residents have gained no respect as for what their enhancements have meant to their lives all these years later.
