Reflections for Police Officer William Coleman Cook

Life sure has its frightening and scariest moments. Police and firefighters for example must put fear and worry aside as they battle evil, arson and the like. Arson is one the worst and costliest of crimes as the sanctity of life so special hangs in the balance. There can be no teetering when terror and torment, pain and suffering are conjuring up anger. Healing and its process do take time. In Dade County tension and violence was handled in a prudent and in a most tenacious way by you, Officer Cook. The simplicity of your job was to maintain your your poise while keep your honesty, dignity and integrity intact as you were patrolling the streets protecting and serving mankind. Comrades from far and wide as well as locally have saluted and remembered your beloved character and the respect it held humbly within your community and department. You'll always be treasured and loved by your family who pursues their life's aspirations by your inspirations and devotion to faith and God who saw your missions through. Accomplished and astute. Bold and brave. Courage and inner convictions to do what was deemed proper and professionally enhancing. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. There really is not anything simple and easy in police work. It's diligence to attention and hard work that pays dividends in the end.

At roll call when the watch commander or supervisor says check everything, be careful and let's hit the streets, it is meant as a wake up call to all men and women, honest and brave who go out and battle crime. No matter how large or small, crime is crime. Sometimes a verbal warning is enough, other times stronger actions must be utilized. That is why, Officer Cook, your wisdom, knowledge, leadership and vision were so much in demand. No areas including Dade County are safe and sound one-hundred percent of the time. It takes the complete accounting and integrity, dignity and decency to make peace and liberty the central ingredients to a person's survival. We were in outstanding hands, Officer Cook, your voice and its eloquence handled our representation. Good communication and careful consideration are the edification of our great nation. Made better by your unselfish service and gallantry and grace under duress. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

The heart and soul of any police department is the internal guts of courage and character that is on display daily as officers perform their dangerous and perilous missions. Someway, somehow and from somewhere that intestinal fortitude must be called upon. Yours, Officer Cook, was summoned to aid and assist, help, save and keep Dade County residents protected from the undermining guises of evil. Violence does not vindicate, it only ventures deeper and deeper, more far and wide than we can can see. Your eyes and ears, my neighbor my, friend and hero, Officer Cook, achieved and sought to professionally discourage commissions of more heinous actions stopped on May 16, 1979, by your heroic actions to humanity while you stayed honorable and dignified. Rest in peace. Your valor towards humanity contained the communications of humility, the very foundation in saluting and in honoring your cherished and noble memory.

A person's reflection is the mirror image of how they act. If they act courageously and honorably, the rewards from the Almighty will be great. Opposite actions demean a person, their family and cause humiliation and shame for that individual. It is said that prayer, repentance and charity help avert an evil decree. For police officers keeping the peace and the public safe and sound, honor, integrity and dignity help divert danger and help to provide the environment in which to prosper and achieve. What assisted you, Officer Cook, was your inner ability to remain strong and bold. Nobody is a goody two shoes, just stay the course, do your job, pull your weight and your department will have no problems. A man of your humble stature, Officer Cook, carried your persona and a uniform donned with resolve, decency and a cheerful character. Commitment and conviction do pack an enormous size, but in this day and age, the weight of violence requires something large enough to offset its evil affects. Those geared to performance will accomplish. Those who stray and betray their badges and uniforms had better lookout. Integrity, dignity and honesty each call for a certain measure of professionalism. Police officers have enough common sense to smell a problem and to make quick and rational decisions on how to resolve any problems that may arise. Fires leave odors. Evil leaves a scent that is quite noticeable. In Dade County, its people wanted solid leadership and reliability. They got that and more from yourself, Officer Cook. Humbly and without reservations or hesitations. The transitions were made a bit better. Always thought of and not forgotten. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. You badge and uniform, Officer Cook, left morals and humility following close behind.

Being timid is comparable to fear. Officers cannot ever let on their fears, though danger is apart of their profession. They have to be relentless in their professional tasks. They must be the face of the very public that they serve and preserve. Dade County was never in greater hands, no more dignified a person. You were a tireless employee delivering the much needed effort through dignity, honesty and integrity. Putting peace and transparency on the proper chart, you will be saluted for your heroic actions. Officer Cook, God is watching over your soul, one that was courageous and vigilant while being the courteous professional your comrades knew you to be. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

The public doesn't always see their public servants. So it makes sense that we do not know what they are thinking about. If you saw a young man wearing badge#1664 patrolling in Dade County in the early to late 1970's they saw you, Officer Cook. In your nobility and pleasant demeanor calming the masses down, speaking from the heart clearly and concisely. A passionate man, an honorable gentleman whose dignity and integrity allowed you six years to consolidate, navigate and collaborate with other comrades in this never ending battle over wickedness. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. Sadly, yet with humility, God as Chief Protector has over twenty-two-thousand brave souls of honorable public service sheltered for eternity where never again will they be harmed.
