Reflections for Police Officer William Coleman Cook

Tension and stress can leave the most patient person at times a bit traumatized and confused. No officer can succeed in their endeavors when they are this way or dazed. Only one who is in control of their honesty, dignity and integrity can achieve any measure of accomplishment. You persevered, Officer Cook, you more than participated in the quiet and relaxation of Dade County by giving your life, your soul and your commitment. It's where you character resided and now up in God's heavenly shelters of eternity does your soul rest and go from place to place observing other officers as brave as you were policing and protecting the public interest. Loyalty and trust are a two way street just as faith, hope and optimism which at times like hope springs eternal. One determined and dedicated servant using his voice and influence to make a positive impression upon all mankind. All your life, Officer Cook, nothing spoken all your life but the truth and your righteousness lives on in your family's pursuits of peace and their aspirations forever. A legacy truly worth remembering and saluting for class, valor and humility to all of humanity. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. The thirst to learn, the quest to maintain stability was your professional role and the staple for which we can be extremely thankful to our hero, Godsend and warrior. Always tenacious in attacking violence and its evil. And now you have been rewarded for all your efforts, Officer Cook, that have your comrades cherishing and admiring your career and a most passionate life, one where compassion was exercised properly and most fittingly.

Once a bullet leaves its chamber it cannot be redirected. Only the loving and respectful resolve can be directed precisely where it can have the most powerful effect. And that's where your preservation and service took place, Officer Cook, right in the heart and soul of Dade County. Its citizens received nothing bur honorable and heroic loyalty from an esteemed colleague to all his peers. Professionally and personally you were a humble and humane gentleman, Officer Cook, with a strength of heart, courageous and bold character and the pride and commitment like no other. And you have been missed terribly. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

When officers give their lives, a part of their honesty, bravery and integrity leaves those who continue to fight on. Dade County has lost too many good women and men who are now up in heaven walking and watching us as they patrol God's sacred streets. Never will any harm come to them. You were a large part of its landscape, Officer Cook and so was your faith and reliability. There was never a question of your unshakable character, desire and devotion. In Dade County as in all venues the ability to recognize, process and to resolve a situation before it becomes worse is what is asked of our bravest and most humble men and women. God's destiny comes calling and now that proverbial baton has since been passed to other comrades to take hold of with humility and a keen vision of what lurks ahead. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

Collusion. Confusion. Distortion. Nothing but sure ways to get into trouble by being dishonest and lacking the proper dignity and integrity to solve any problems that police must occupy themselves with. There was no confusing your honor and bravery when Dade County and its residents were concerned. Your considerations helped maintain the broad spectrum of peace and liberty. The unity that civilization demands was handled humbly by your unwavering efforts, Officer Cook. There was no misrepresentation where the truth planted its branches. Your courageous soul flies on Our Creator's wings of humility, the gallantry you had, Officer Cook, to battle through the walls of evil. Committal is never easy for a family when they have to bury their valiant loved ones. You were a hero and a very blessed Godsend sent here to do good deeds on behalf of all mankind. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. One thing you always had, Officer Cook, character and its real commitment, conviction and respectful care for everyone. You afforded courtesy to each and everyone. The big picture was never more clearer and in focus when you patrolled. Those heavenly gates are certainly lit up by those comrades who like you sacrificed and displayed unselfish sense of fairness and firmness when needed. A public servant's morals must glisten like their badge and the uniform they wear with privilege and perseverance.

The drive to succeed, the resolve to solve, the determination to exterminate evil from our midst sometimes comes with a heavy price and can leave their families with heavy hearts. All in the name of civilization and the honor, integrity and dignity that is due the people you watch over. Dade County was under your watchful eyes and ears, Officer Cook, the sacrifice you made on May 16, 1979, displayed what your family members and professional brothers and sisters knew all along, that you were brave and unafraid and unwavering in your commitments to pride and excellence, you had the unselfish character to endeavor to calm an emotionally troubled young man. Surrendering is not easy. All any public servant tries is their best at conversing first before more crucial action is required. That day, Officer Cook, humanity is humbled by your humility to them. Leading others is not easy nor is it for the shy or timid. There is a method that is trained, practiced and learned in the various police academies on how to handle violence and terror, where torment and turmoil cannot raise its nastiness. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero, you saved lives. Now it's up to those who have succeeded you in this incorporation of honesty, bravery and integrity that can make all the difference. Your legacy shines brightly and very warmly as does your beloved soul cherished, respected and admired by all mankind. Your loss, Officer Cook has affected not just your family as they march on in their pursuits of happiness, good health and peace, it tears at those comrades who serve and protect with the passion and valor as you displayed on your uniform and badge.

Police officers as well as any public servants must not be marooned in mediocrity. They must devote their labors of bravery and resolve with dignity and the determination and dedication to hone honesty and the integration of integrity into their endeavors. All the seriousness must be given when involved in split second decisions that may mean life or death heaven forbid. The security and welfare of all Dade County residents was placed soundly, confidently and most humbly in your good hands, Officer Cook. You were an esteemed colleague whose focus was in making peace and unity a master characterization of your heroic legacy. Well founded on influencing those you served and protected to just do the proper thing. Respect and morals carry a huge onus whenever dealing with crisis and any violence that officers realize must be prevented at all costs. You will forever be remembered for having that special gift of grace and gallantry that when tied together brought humanity and its humility full circle. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. Dade County, North Miami Beach, Florida where you grew up and for that matter the entire police nation will remain inspired by your aspirations to make our society great again through your nobility.

Callousness and its carnage leave the computations of this world in ruins. The shocking results of death and its violence create mayhem and confusion like no other. You were a robust and exuberant young man, Officer Cook, like a child waiting to open his birthday gift. Treating Dade County and its citizens with tremendous tenacity and dignity the kind of morally professional conduct that is demanded of all public servants. When one go outs to patrol their venues of vigilance and keeping valor on their sleeves, we can only thank them for doing a thankless job that at many moments has perils and dangers lurking by their sides. Seeing that you afforded each person with courtesy and politeness, Officer Cook, it then goes to reason that you should be so honored humbly and saluted vigorously for having the courage and inner strength to preserve and protect those freedoms and values we cherish and honor. Obedience and confidence can usually influence any individual to do what is considered correct not only legally but in Our Creator's eyes. The ones that see and hear everything, as your vision, wisdom, knowledge and leadership provided the impetus for your resourceful ingenuity, intelligence and instincts to work together efficiently. No character, conviction or commitment concerns, Officer Cook, purely a devoted and determined man who served his missions faithfully, firmly and squarely by the book. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. Everything is noted in God's grand ledger of His angelic heroes and heroines. Humane and noble, bravery and their piousness persevering and preserving our trust and belief that things will run their courses smoothly and quite succinctly. All your conversations and messages, Officer Cook, were down to earth and to the point. On May 16, 1979, your life and marvelous career were penned and preserved forever in God's hallowed walls of honor and enhancement. Endearment and enlightenment have followed your beloved soul to God's pearly gates of heaven where one day your family will reunite with you and your dad, Charles, may he too rest in peace. Stay well Mrs. Cook. I'll keep offering my heartfelt prayers for you and your lovely family. Your son's ambitions now serve as our motivations to aspire to greater heights. Heroism. Honor. The tabulations are in. We pray for the outcome of peace and unity in 2017 coming to fruition. After what happened yesterday afternoon at Ft. Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport where five people were killed and eight others wounded by gunfire, really now sets in. People were taken off their planes and had to stand for hours on end on the tarmac. I know your soul, Officer Cook, watches over everything. After all, you were a supremely humble servant here in Dade County where service and honesty do go hand in hand. You were so beloved, admired and respected for having the unselfish dignity and heroism to battle through this evil that at times cannot be logically explained. Though, your legacy, its refined character and commitment have been remembered for coming to the rescue of your comrades and those civilians that were trapped in this hornet's net of violence. You remained as calm and as collected as possible hoping to appease that troubled young man into surrendering. You were accountable and present when you were needed the most. All due to a terrific upbringing and first class training at the Miami-Dade Police Academy. No one forgets a humble gentleman of care, concern and compassion who laid his life down for his friends and his community. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

Separate but equal. We all go our own way and yet we endeavor to do so with humility, honesty and integrity incorporating our every step that we take in a dignified manner. God creates each person as He sees fit and yet that humble balance must be realized. Where we live in North Miami Beach, Florida where you grew up, we live in a home around the corner from where you lived as a young man. Holly, my wife, works as a professional childcare provider taking care of young children and some that she watches have special needs. That is where the compassion and diligence, the warmth and embrace means so much to these children who must be nurtured and nourished while staying active. Exactly what you did, Officer Cook, in serving and preserving Dade County and its residents. Their freedoms and peace would not have come about if not for your valor, heroism and ingenuity while being committed to doing what was deemed proper and moral. Your character and conviction are all a part of your legacy which is so honored and saluted today and everyday that it fortified our society. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. Destiny when it calls there is no time to rest on one's laurels. We must act righteously and decisively to eliminate violence and its core of conceit and cruel destruction that can in the end threaten our lives of nobility and leisure.

The world is becoming more dangerous. Thank God you were here years ago protecting and serving the Dade County population. Reverence, resolve and honesty coupled with your integrity and dignity went door to door in heroic fashion accomplishing what needed to be done. Colleagues and friends, your family, Officer Cook, have continued paying homage to your memory. Devotion, hope and prayers carried your life and professional pursuits in life. Your were a happy and warm gentleman with a kind heart and a giving soul that is now in heaven patrolling God's streets where so many other brothers and sisters live in eternity. Your boldness and bravery will remain cherished. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. Fatal accidents and shootings seem to dominate the newspapers. I call them fish wrappers because they have shrunk the papers. Proofreaders could be utilized more. Too many mistakes in the spelling of words. A public servant's mistakes get magnified many times over. Hopefully they don't lead to any loss of life or property.
