Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer William Coleman Cook

Fortune and fate are given to each human being by Our Lord Himself. What we make of ourselves as we pursue our happiness that is another manner. Your life and story, Officer Cook, has been written, told and shared by all whoever lived. A hero whose integrity, decency and class were all the results of a good home life and terrific upbringing. Dade County and its people were properly cared for and given the chances to see peace and serenity abide with them. The streets can be a holy terror with your commitment and excellence, Officer Cook, they continue being monitored by those who have succeeded you. Lofty expectations and God knows hopefully their humility toward humanity will hold sway in this war over wickedness. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. The heavens are golden and that's because of heroes and heroines such as yourself ,Officer Cook, who answered those calls of danger where destiny took you.

I just read of a reflection for an officer killed whose widow received one-hundred thousand dollars from a man who won a lottery. Back in 1969 that was a lot of money and it is only fair if a man gives his life as you solemnly did, Officer Cook, for Dade County to prosper and to live peacefully. But make no mistake violence should not have ended your missions and travels at age twenty-five with more left to accomplish. Honesty, integrity and wisdom dignify a man or woman's desires to make their communities safer and by enriching your community, Officer Cook, may your spirit be rewarded. It sure is as God has now given you a humbly more difficult task and that is to patrol those golden pathways in heaven. Reign down your goodwill upon those brave and honored souls of distinction whose boldness and resolve resembled your own. May you rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. Character, decency and dedication make one's job a bit less complex. The stress and demands will always be present. Acclimating must be a required first step in order to push past peril and danger.

Bravery must share its infinite wisdom with vision and conviction in order for honor and integrity to serve its purposes usefully and righteously. Your good name, Officer Cook, was instrumental in bringing terror to its knees and believe me you tried your utmost on May 16, 1979, along with the heart and valor of your comrades you brought safety and sanctity back to Dade County and its landscape where peace and unity would be appreciated. Your character and commitment, Officer Cook, would not have it any other way. The ending was not what your family and peers expected, yet as pious as your family is they know one day soon your soul and spirit will meet in heaven them and greet them with that same smile that remains cherished and gregarious. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

A nice surrounding surely assists in making peace a firmer reality. What is relevant, Officer Cook, is that you were a supremely humble man and that you received from your loving parents. I would sure love to know how your mother, Mrs. Julia Cook is doing today. You were her beloved, darling and heroic son who rescued Dade County and its citizens from pure evil. Cowardly and heinous, Mr. Pearsall took you from us, your family and peers whom you partnered with to save and preserve the honor, integrity and dignity of life. At least, Officer Cook, your compass of valor and courage was centered where it would have the greatest affect. It's composed in one's how they will conduct their life and affairs on and off duty. Cornerstones and foundations are built for a reason and that is so our society and humanity can document your desire and devotion always etched squarely in our hearts and souls. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

Throwing dirt on doom does not seem enough for its advances must be completely destroyed from any future attacks upon society. You threw your dignity, honor and heart upon Dade County's own heart and history shining in your prideful yet humble badge and uniform of professional distinction. Thankfully some peace, harmony and the elegance of unity has entered those corridors ahead and behind us. Boldness and bravery are not vainly benign. They are instilled upon one's soul of honor, integrity and dignity from the moment of their conception. From your earliest days, Officer Cook, you dreamed and aspired to become a public servant and so patrolling in Dade County was your central location where most of your toughest battles lied ahead. But make no mistake our peace of mind and liberty we enjoy came at the cost of your unselfish character and unwavering commitment to undying pride and excellence. We must not overlook humility and grace, humanity was preserved by your efforts and so it shall be humbly honored and revered. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

In order for there to be flexibility, there must be some feasibility. The whole world does not revolve around one event no matter how seismic it is. Though, violence, domestic or otherwise requires the quick and practical attention of all duly brave and reverent law personnel. It's a battle cry you heard many times over the course of your six years with Metro-Dade Police Department, Officer Cook. Braver and more dignified than ever. Honorable and packed with resounding integrity built into your stoically heroic character. Dade County and its citizens wanted peace and demanded excellence and experience. Well, they got both and much more from your serenely dear soul. Unity drums up certain things, a meaning of values and ideals all working as one within the framework of your humility, vigilance and valiant resolve. Perceiving and receiving the signal denote two different things and for your maturity, wisdom and vision, Officer Cook, the effort went far and wide. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

Where there is smoke there may be a fire. What quenches the outrages of this wild scene, a little tenacity and ferocity feverishly poured over its smoldering wickedness. You put out loads of trouble, Officer Cook, in Dade County and for what you and your fellow officers had to occupy your goodwill with on May 16, 1979, was dashing a diabolical man's crazed advances into our cocoon of tranquil and peaceful neighborhoods. Your hopes, aspirations and dreams became our solemn inspirations as we so duly honor your memory, integrity, courage and dignity all by keeping loyal and pursuing the right causes. An indictment is that this day should have never come and yet as excellent as you were, Officer Cook, in calming down people whose tempers frayed, this day Our Creator passed your missions onto other women and men to bravely and humbly carry our your legacy of humility and heroism for humanity. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

To demean would be comparable to embarrassing someone. You spoke gently, softly and with a humble reverence for your official position, Officer Cook. The truth is just that and to gain one's trust you must be loyal and able to take direction from your superiors. Dade County was where you obtained your professional training to go on patrol searching for quiet while looking for violence to remove it from our trails. You blazed a wonderful trail, Officer Cook, so refined, so humanely heroic and with the full arsenal of acumen and honesty, it's these characteristics that made your integrity and focus stand up to terror. No officer should be violated as you too, Officer Cook, had a life and a beautiful wife to go hone to. It is a real shame when you said goodbye to Karen that day you would not be returning home. Certainly you are missed. Humanity misses your ever present humility which filled those vials of valor and humble distinction. Serenity and safety demand respect and Badge#1664 gave the effort and tried to rid our world of this undue violence. You are to be fondly saluted for salvation and the motivation to steer those of us who want to live righteous and passionate lives. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

Greatness is from having the humble and humane instincts to act accordingly. Actions does speak louder than just lip service. We here in Dade County would never witness a second of peace if all public servants just spoke instead of acting as dignified as they shall. Your humility, Officer Cook, was stored in your heart of gold an don your uniform of understanding and your badge of bravery and true trust its undying boldness. You can be sure, Officer Cook, your life, career and memory will remain cherished as you were always well admired among the ranks of your department. Enhancement comes from having the wisdom and its clarity to view what has to be done to eradicate evil. Your exploits eclipsed far and away what is expected from all servants. Our Master knows His people. He recognizes truth and justice.

Tragedy leaves that sad expression on one's face. It was a heart wrenching day already with two of your comrades shot and nearly killed, Officer Cook and you answered that call and were shot and mortally wounded. Dade County never forgot your classic desire, dedication and the leadership for which you led other brave and honest men and women through grief and terror. Anguish shall one day be greeted by laughter, although the bitter sadness forever lingers around the community where you protected the integrity and dignity of those wanting tranquility and some sense of real unity. Perception is not always reality, though humility and ingenuity teach us a whole lot into your heroic legacy, Officer Cook, one of faith, loyalty and the good graces of civility. Desire does not daydream and never does dedication. Your leadership and motivation, Officer Cook, forged newer relationships for those residing in Dade County during your watch. We look and listen hoping for a drop of dignity and reason for why your life had to end. No plausible reason. Headaches and toothaches cause pain, great pain just as the tragic loss of a beloved family hero who gives their life for the causes of character, honor and justice. It is a demanding and thankless position and there are those who accept this challenge freely and without reservation. You signed up, Officer Cook, for a profession that does have rewards and yet those obstacles are out there flying around like a vulture waiting for a carcass. Dade County's folks expected and got more than they could have dreamed of when you patrolled for a balance of harmony, freedom and the liberty that unity strives to beckon. A calling of honesty, dignity and integrity is not a simple process even with intense scrutiny, training and classroom and street work. The thugs, hoodlums and criminals are out in force waiting to steer their evil straight at us and your loving presence insured at least a fighting chance of dignity and determination to lead us through strife and sinister episodes of turmoil. Always a smile and politeness nestled among your morals, mettle, values and ideals. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

And though I did not know you or your family until I first met your nephew, Justin Miller and your niece his sister, Gina Wilkerson, you could feel their sense of loss and now it all comes around full circle. What a man! A public servant who glorified His Creator by doing His will and serving that cause of which many don't even go to.
