Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Sergeant John David Conner, III

Prince William County will always hold a bitter/sweet place in my heart. Back in the 1970's, I attended high school at MCCDEC Quantico. Later I returned to MCCDEC for various USMC officer schools during the time that Sergeant Conner protected those of us residing in Prince William County. I never met a member of the MPD who was anything less than professional.

Thank God, federal judges did not fall for the ploys of Smith’s attorneys. Ironically, Smith was executed in 1997, a week before the anniversary of Your murder.

Tonight, I will be at a local watering hole making a toast in memory of Sergeant Conner along with the memory of my closest WM "Sister," who disappeared in Prince William County a few months later....

I visited Sgt Connor's grave at Quantico National Cemetery several days after the funeral following a midnight shift. It was raining and overcast. I was tired after a twelve hour shift at Quantico Marine Base but felt that is was important to pay my respects and honor a fellow law enforcement officer who died doing what so many others wish they could do but do not have the courage do so. Serve their fellow man, protect the innocent and serve a purpose that is greater than oneself. You will not be forgotten, brother.

John, Not a moment goes by when I don't walk past the memorial in the front lobby to the police dept. and look over and become suddenly empty. You would be amazed how much has changed with the department. I am sure you are looking down and laying your hand on those still working there that were close friends with you. Many of retired. but I know they still think of you. You left a lasting impression on everyone. I will always have the image of your motorcycle in the front of the building with your boots as a memorial during the first few weeks of your leaving us. I know you are at peace now and hope you continue to watch over us and your family. Rest in peace brother.

John,

I have recently come across this website and I can still remember that sad night like yesterday. Upon reporting to duty that night, we were ordered to move into the areas of the City to support your department.

I had a hard time believing that you had passed on that night, and when my tour of duty ended that night...I went home 'stunned'.

I can vividly remember the good times we spent at Fort Belvoir ten years prior to that night. You were assigned to the Accident Investigation section and I was assigned to the K-9 section of the 521st MP Co. I remember that your building was just a short distance across the field from our K-9 training area. We would occasionally meet out in the training field and talk shop, while my dog went through some drills. I enjoyed those times.

I thought it was quite interesting that we ran into each other once again, after we left the US Army. You began sworn duty with the City of Manassas Police and I with the Prince William County Police, both departments located next to each other! I remember we often talked about the good 'ole times' in the Army at Fort Belvoir! I will indeed remember those good times forever.

I have now left the County Police as I have reached retirement age, but I will never forget working with you in Manassas and Fort Belvoir.

You were never afraid to tread into 'harm's way', and will never be forgotten.

I will always remember you John... as a 'friend' and a 'hero'.

To John & Family,

I recently located this sight and I thank God that I have. I remember our days together before you Left the Army to go to Manassas Park and then to on to Manassas. I remember how excited you were to get into your civilian career and how excited I was to follow as I went to work with Prince William County. I also remember with sadness the word of your years later after I had returned to work in Montana. As I reflect after all of these years I am also reminded of how many old friends now grace the pages of this websight and how close I came to gracing it myself more than once. Why God left me and not you or the others I will never fully understand, b ut please remember that your sacrifice will never be forgotten and will always live on in the hearts of those of us who knew and loved you. Rest in peace my brother. Someday we will meet again.

Sgt. Conner,
It took nine more years, but the piece of scum that murdered you finally got the justice that he deserved. I would like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for the citizens of Manassas.

I was a young boy of 11 yrs old when the tragic incident took place. I played around the Manassas City Department often and made friends with many officers since my mother worked for the department and have so much respect for every officer that works with this department. Sgt. Conners' tragic moment will always be something that I will never forget and will always remember John for his courage and outstanding dedication. Thank you John for making Mansassas City a safe place to live.
