Reflections for Patrolman Garrett Cody

Patrolman Cody, it has been 123 years since you were taken from us. New England law enforcement has continued to thrive, learn and become safer due to the traditions and sacrifices you, your family, and many others have made for us. Thank you for your 9 years of law enforcement service.

I met Paul Higgins many years ago when he came to the Arlington Police Station to learn the details of his Great grandfather's death. I learned of his death my first year on the job in 1977. I fought for years to get the Department to recognize Officer Cody which they finally did on the 100th anniversary of his murder.

Now it has been 114 years. You are still remembered and we all hope you are still resting in peace.

How many murderers are spared true justice because someone claimed they suffered mental illness? How many more will?

Your sacrifice will NEVER be forgotten as the circumstances resurface at an alarming rate.

God Bless you, Brother.

To expand on Judy Tracy's post, Garrett Cody was Ryan White's great-great-grandfather.

Garrett Cody > dau Margaret Cody Robertie > son Lawrence Robertie > dau Renee Margaret Robertie > son Ryan White. Garrett's murder, and the subsequent impact to his descendents, was felt deeply. And now, my son, Ryan White, is also a police officer. A proud heritage remembered this Memorial Day weekend.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 111th anniversary year of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace

My son in-law, Officer Ryan White, is a distant relative of Officer Cody. Officer White was not raised in Massachusetts however; my family was originally from Arlington. Only after speaking to Ryan about his heritage was the tragic story unveiled about Officer Cody. Officer White has expressed interest in visiting a memorial dedicated to Officer Cody. Any information on such memorial would be appreciated.
Thank you
