Reflections for Correctional Officer Merle E. Clutts

My heart felt condolences to the family I know this kind of loss resonates through the generations. My father is retired now after 24 years USAF and 29 DOC, finishing as Administrator of a NJ penitentiary. I know what ind of man it takes to do the job and this family should be very proud of Officer Clutts service to his fellow Americans.

Im a former Correctional Officer 4 years at a state MAX and deathrow. I will strongly opine that any Officer who served as long as Officer Clutts and having the capability to manage the "worst of the worst" inmates as did Officer Cutts, had to be a strong Officer, never compromised, never abusive, always dutifuul and professional. Well, the gangsters want the strong Officers eliminated one way or another so their gang can have more control through violence and intimidation. Officer Clutts being targeted is the ultimate recognition that he was top tier. His family can be proud, as am I. Where would we be without men like this? Rest in peace brother.

In every tragedy one can find a glimpse of hope. I hope no other C.O. ever has to suffer what Officer Merle Clutts went through. He looks like he was a happy guy and just about to retire and start a new life after prison.....Very sad.
I hope all active C.O.'s remember the inmates are all still human and as such have feelings too. They may react very
adversely to even a simple comment or look and make much ado about nothing in their minds. Please remember with the only human contact being you the C.O. perhaps all day, all week they will boil down that word or look into who knows.....so please I think if Merle were able to tell and teach you anything he would want to say don't . Dont bother, disturb, laugh at, or about that locked up person. Withhold your emotions and personal thoughts....it may save your life.....Merle did not deserve what happened.....I hope they found peace in the rest Jesus brings to all who believe in and upon his death on the cross..but
More importantly his resurrection where we are all invited to find salvation and eternal life in a sin free
Paradise and God's glory..

I was a correctional officer at FCI Terminal Island when Merle was murdered, remember it well. Silverstein later came to Terminal Island that year to attend a trial in Los Angeles. My boss, 6'6" and 250+ pounds had a 'heart to heart' with Silverstein and he gave us no trouble at all...which was better for him in the long run if you get my drift.

To officer Clutts you were everything that a Correction Officer should be, you walked the toughest beat of them all. I was a Correction Officer for two years, and then became a Police Officer, so I know the dangers of what goes with working inside of a prison. You are a hero because you did not give in to inmates or let them intimidate you in any way. You were attacked by some animal who should have gotten the death penalty, but instead still exist in our world. You are a true hero. you make me proud to work in law enforcement. Rest in peace, god bless you and your family.

OH HOW I MISS YOU, SO MUCH. I WAS THERE. I REMEMBER EVERY YEAR ON CORRECTIONAL WORKER WEEK AS WELL AS ON THAT SATURDAY ON 10/22/83. YOU WERE MY BUDDY AS WELL AS YOUR BOYS. I'VE MOVED SINCE THEN AND RETIRED, BUT MY HUSBAND, JOHN IS STILL WORKING WITH THE BOP AND THE INMATE THAT DID THIS IS NOW WHERE HE WORKS. I WILL PUT A ROSE ON YOUR NAME AT THE ADX MAX, FLORENCE ON TUESDAY, JUNE 9TH, 2009. I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER YOU. I REMEMBER AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK YOU WOULD STOP BY AND JUST SAY HI. I LOVE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. LOVE, PAM

I JUST HEARD ABOUT THIS INCIDENT ON THE DISCOVERY CHANEL YESTERDAY ON A SPECIAL ENTITLED 'GANGLAND' THE ARIAN BROTHERHOOD. AS A FORMER C.O. I KNOW THE DANGERS THAT ARE FACED DAILY. THE OFFICERS HAVE NO WEAPONS; YET THE COWARD INMATES THAT ATTACK USUALLY DO. KNOWING HOW THE INSIDE WORKS, I AM SURE THIS COWARD SUFFERED FOR A LONG TIME AFTER THAT INCIDENT, OR WHEREVER HE WAS SHIPPED TO THERE AFTER.
GOD SPEED BROTHER.
