Reflections for Deputy Sheriff John M. Cleary

As a retired police officer I consider it an honor to have served among the ranks of brave officers such as Deputy Cleary who gave his life protecting his community so many years ago. Time does not diminish the courage shown by Deputy Cleary or the sacrifice that he made. May Deputy Cleary always be remembered for his bravery and for his dedication as he gave his life in service to his fellow men. Today my nine year old grandson visited Washington D.C. for the first time and had the opportunity to honor the men and women who had died in the line of duty. He wants to be a policemen like his father and his grandfather before him. I pray that his name never appears on this monument.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the one hundred and seventeenth anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

Rest In Peace.

The beauty of the ODMP is that it helps honor and remember always true heroes and warriors such as yourself. I can only hope your family and ancestors are aware of this page and visit often to honor your memory, as well as your dedication and service. I stop by this website often after the death of two dear friends with the NCSHP (Troopers Calvin Taylor E.O.W. October 3, 2001 and Anthony Cogdill E.O.W. May 30, 2003). Unfortunately, I had to add the name of another friend recently. Deputy Jeffery Hewitt, Buncombe County (NC) Sheriff’s Department, E.O.W. April 4, 2004.

I want to honor all of those who gave their life in the line of duty. Although your death was many many years ago, you are still a hero.

God Bless the men and women who continue to serve their communities in our great Nation.

...Gone, but never Forgotten....
