Reflections for Trooper James Herbert Fulford, Jr.
Your heroism and service is honored today, the 20th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer
Time never diminishes respect and your memory will always be honored and revered. I pray for solace for all those who love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. Your family is in my heart's embrace today.
Rest In Peace.

My father owned interstate towing in jefferson county, on many ocasions, I had the pleasure of working this or that with Jimmy, and being a kid, I sometimes found myself on the other side of the law, through it all, he was a great man first, and an even better law enforcement officer, we used to joke that he would ticket his mother if. She were breaking the law, however in truth, if more people were like Jimmy, this world would be a much better place, I am honored to have known him, honored to have worked alongside him, and to this day, still wish he was here, I talk about Trooper Fulford all the time, and I am sure when I do, he smiles, from heaven as he thinks... I remember that Ronnie... Rip jimmy

Ladies & Gentlemen, I had the great honor of meeting TROOPER Jimmy Fulford at North Florida Junior College in the mid 70's. Please note that I capitolized TROOPER Fulord. Jimmy LOVED the highway patrol --it was his passion. A passion not directed at catching people but a passion of HELPING people. We became good friends at North Florida Jr. College and had lunch most days --- sometimes at Hillcrest Dairy Bar --- I will never forget that White Ford Fairlane that he had (I never laughed because I had a green Chevy Nova) ---We both babied those old cars. TROOPER Fulford was indeed for Law and order --- no doubt. But if your mother, wife, sister or daughter was broke down on the highway, let me tell you, Jimmy TROOPER Fulford was the first Road Ranger. We lost this fine genltman way too young.

Jimmy,
You were one of the 1st friends I made when I moved to USA and Madison to be exact. It was a great year when we would chat in between classes. How could I forget a true friend? You had shared about joining the FHP after finishing the Junior College. For 20 years or more, everytime I would see a State Patrol car, I would think of you. It was a sad day when I tried to look you up and a friend from Madison told me about how you were killed in the line of duty. You have only left the physical earth and I know you are watching us all from where you are. This is not the last you have heard from me, you rascal. I will see you soon..

I was employed by the Gadsden County S.O. working in the Jail the day that this incident happened, I still remember the way the air left my body as I heard the news of Trooper Fulfords death. When they brought the suspects responsible for his death into our facility, it was a very chilling experience. I will never forget the way Sheriff Woodham spoke about this Trooper, it has left a life long effect on me. To the family of Trooper Fulford I say, may God watch over you and keep your family safe.

I went to school with the twins. Timmy was the tall mischevious one and Jimmy was the skinny baby-faced sweet one. He grew into a fine young man. I remember Mrs Fulford was a teacher in Greenville. If memory serves me correctly after 40 years, they called their grandmother Nanna. This boy wanted to be a law enforcement officer since he was in first grade, maybe before. I understand he was an asset to his agency and to my great home state of Florida. RIP, Jimmy. You did your time and you ended your watch doing what you were always meant to do. Sherri McHargue.

Thank God for Tropper James H. Fulford. I was a patient of KeithAnn's and a native of Jefferson County. As James looks down from Heaven he can truly say, "May the work I've done, speak for me."

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

"Hello Mamma!" I can still hear your voice and see your smile, Jimmy. I was 8 months expecting my and Trooper Mike Grissom's second child, Holly when we were transferred to Jefferson County in 1985. Strangely enough, the name Mike and I picked out for this child was Ashley Marie, but KeithAnn and Jimmy had a two year old named exactly that, so she became Holly. Mike and Jimmy instantly became best friends. They coached our sons, Will and James Herbert in t-ball and we enjoyed many cook-outs, special occasions and just "time together." They were our special friends. Mike and Jimmy had matching boats to take their boys fishing. It was only last year that Mike could sell his boat, some 13 years. I guess it was a way to keep a part of Jimmy close. Our Will was 12 when I told him the news of Jimmy's death. (James Herbert, Will's best friend was only 11)
In December 2005, FHP Recruit Will Grissom hand carried the memorial photo of Trooper Jimmy Fulford to the new FHP Academy's Memorial Wall. He said, "It was an honor." I think that Jimmy would have liked that.
James Herbert, Ashley and KeithAnn - we love you all and we still miss Jimmy. But all we have to do is close our eyes and listen and we who love him can still hear his voice and see his sweet smile. And we all know that because of Jesus, we will see him again.
Until we meet again Jimmy.

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Trooper Fulford and we honor his distinguished service to the cause of justice and peace. Sadly, our nation has lost one of its finest citizens, a community has lost a friend and protector, and a family has lost an example of character and courage who they will love and respect forever. Today, because of the sacrifice Trooper Fulford has made, the house of freedom is stronger, sturdier, and more secure.
To the family and friends of Trooper Fulford, I would like you to know that a lot of people pray for you, and my hope is that their prayers will give you the strength necessary to move on. Just as you were always with him when he walked the beat or patrolled the streets, know that he will always be with you - wherever you may be. In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Trooper Fulford is a man distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. You, your family and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Something led me to Jimmy's page here today. My husband is his cousin. All day today, I knew something was special.....it's been 15 years. Hard to believe. The children were very small when Jimmy died. Now, they are beautiful young people who contribute daily to the world they live in. I am sure Jimmy is proud....and yes, I am sure he knows how much we all miss him. We all love you, and miss you, Jimmy. Your legacy will always live.

I come to ODMP often to visit my husbands reflection page, but I also take time to visit other officers reflecton pages as well. Today I came across yours. Ironically, I work with brave men who put their life on the line every day regarding the situation you encountered. You were a brave hero Tpr. Fulford. Thank you for your service and dedication to public safety.
May you continue to keep watch over your family, friends, and co-workers from above...always.

The family of Trooper Fulford deserves our appreciation and gratitude for their sacrifice. No greater love has a man than the will to give his life for another. In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Trooper Fulford is a man distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. It's not how Jimmy died that made him a Hero, it's how he lived!
"Blessed are the peacemekers: for they shall be called the children of God."
Matt 5:7
"When God made Peace Officers*."
When the lord was creating Peace Officers, he was into his sixth day of
overtime when an angel appeared and said, "You're doing a lot of
fiddling around on this one."
And the Lord said, Have you read the spec on this order? A Peace
Officer has to be able to run five miles through alleys in the dark,
scale walls, enter homes the health inspector wouldn't touch, and not
wrinkle their uniform.
They have to be able to sit in an undercover car all day on a stakeout,
cover a homicide scene that night, canvass the neighborhood for
witnesses, and testify in court the next day.
They have to be in top physical condition at all times, running on
black coffee and half- eaten meals. And they have to have six pairs of
hands.
The angel shook her head slowly and said, "Six pairs of hands*.No
Way."
"It's not the hands that are causing me the problems," said the
Lord, "It's the three pairs of eyes an officer has to have."
That's on the standard model? asked the angel.
The Lord nodded. One pair that sees through a bulge in a pocket before
he asks, "May I see what's in there sir?" (When they already know
and wishes they had taken that accounting job.) Another pair here in the
side of their head for their partners' safety. And another pair of
eyes here in front that can look reassuringly at a bleeding victim and
say, " You'll be alright ma'am, when they know it isn't so."
"Lord," said the angel, touching his sleeve," rest and work
tomorrow."
"I can't," said the Lord, "I already have a model that can talk
a 250 pound drunk into a patrol car without incident and feed a family
of five on civil service paycheck."
The angel circled the model of the Peace Officer very slowly, "Can it
think?" she asked.
"You bet," said the Lord, "It can tell you elements of a hundred
crimes, recite Miranda warnings in it's sleep; detain, investigate,
search, and arrest a gang member on the street in less time than it
takes five judges to debate the legality of the stop*and still it keeps
it's sense of humor.
This officer also has phenomenal personal control. They can deal with
crime scenes painted in HELL, coax a confession from a child abuser,
comfort a murder victim's family' and then read in the daily paper
how Law Enforcement isn't sensitive to the rights of criminal
suspects.
Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek of the
Peace Officer. "There's a leak," she pronounced. "I told you
that you were trying to put too much into this model."
"That's not a leak," said the Lord, "It's a tear."
"What's the tear for?" asked the angel.
"It's for bottled-up emotions, for fallen comrades, for commitment
to that funny piece of cloth called the American flag, and for
justice."
"You're a genius," said the angel.
The Lord looked sober. "I didn't put it there," he said.
