Reflections for Patrolman Jerry Wayne Cawthon
Patrolman Cawthon,
On today, the 60th anniversary of your death I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for the citizens of Amarillo. And to your Family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.

I was 6 when Officer Cawthon was murdered. He was a friend of my parents. I hung out at his house. He took me for a ride on his Harley a few times. I remember his patrol dog, a beautiful German Shepard, that was very protective of him. If only he had been able to have his dog with him that night. From what I remember, A.P.D. had had complaints about officers using their dogs too aggressively and had suspended their use.
I have thought about Jerry often over the years. The few memories I have are ones I will never forget. God bless you Officer Cawthon.

It does not seem fair that the guy only got a ten year sentence. I honor you and all the officers for your courage and doing your job. God Bless You. Jerry Acey Family

You have been heavy on my heart lately and did a google search to see what came up and this was at the top of the search. I am glad someone has put this site together Thank You! Dad I wish I had know you and thank you for your service. The country is going a little crazy and police are not being respected like they should. I'm sadden to read the short bio they have up for you. Plus I forgot that the killer only got 10 years! WOW! Then he got out and murdered again. So sad! You have two granddaughter's from me and one has your same birthday she just turned 42 you would have loved them DeLana Renee and Leslie Jeannette are their names. Mitzi has a boy and girl and I'm hoping you have meet Natasha she passed away 14 years ago February and Jason her son is a good man. Michael also has three children that are all grown Jennifer, Heather and Kevin. We are all doing good and you will be proud of the people we became in spite of the hardships we endured in our young lives.
RIP Dad

Jerry -- it will be 50 years on New Year's morning, but it seems like only yesterday that I would see your smiling face leaning over the back counter asking for a report or asking me to book something in for you.
I was working that night and for some reason a bunch of us had not left the building after 4-12 shift -- I will never forget the chill that went through all of us when the call went out.
I was pretty young back then and you always treated me like I was an equal.
God Bless you -- and as you patrol the streets of Heaven, tell Bill Meadows I miss him too!

Officer Cawthon I respect you in every way and you inspire me as I am trying to begin a career in Law Enforcement. When I first began in my studies of Criminal Justice I had happen to be at Llano Cemetery where I saw your name on the monument of fallen Texas Panhandle Peace Officers. I had the priviledge of serving with Jerry on the same shift, 4pm to midnight,East side beat. Jerry was one of our best K-9 Officers. On the night of his death, he had taken over my beat for that date since I took a day off.The same group of Mexicans that participated in his murder had vowed to kill me previously. I firmly believe that it was a set up and the group thought that I was in that patrol car that evening. Jerry was a good Officer and I will never forget him. Rest in peace Jerry.

Jerry:
It doesn't seem like 42 years since that horrible night. You were a friend and a mentor -- I know you are up there somewhere patrolling Heaven with Bill Meadows!

Patrolman Cawthon,
On today, the 41st anniversary of your murder, I would like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for the citizens of Amarillo. It's a travesty of justice that your murderer was only given 10 years.
