Reflections for Patrol Officer James R. Caruso
Officer Caruso, it has been 66 years since you were taken from us. New England law enforcement has continued to thrive, learn and become safer due to the traditions and sacrifices you, your family, and many others have made for us. Thank you for your 5 years of law enforcement service. I hope your successors got the City to post the plaque for you.

As a young wild teenager Jimmy and I became friends and he became my mentor, he was responsible for my entering the service at an early age to get my life together. I would ride with him often and spend time with him at his off duty job, after entering the service I only saw Jimmy once more (on boot camp leave) I have never forgotten him and visit his grave several times a year. Years latter upon going to work at the prison (R.I.A.C.I.) I came upon His killer who was serving a life sentence, in only about 10 years he had become a trustee and had more freedom than I, at one time folks on the outside were trying to gain a pardon for him (I hope I was some part of blocking this)I was not able to do enough to block his parole, he was paroled in 1971.

I was an East Providence Police Officer. I was Off duty when I received a call that Jimmy had been shot. I responded to the scene where I was teamed up with Ptl. Bob Zollo. We were part of the search team when Massachusetts State Police apprehended the suspects. The sad part is that there was never a permanent marker for Jimmy. Retired Capt. Richard Ferreira and myself have been talking about approaching the City to put up a memorial to Jimmy.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 54th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. How nice that your family is able to honor you on this site.

Jimmy was killed when I was in high school, and that is a day that I'll never forget. He was married to my cousin Evelyn, and his two daughters were just little girls, now grown and married with children of their own. I remember the wake with police depts. from all over the country, and the ride to the cemetry, police men standing on the center line of the road and saluting the casket as it passed by. Jimmy was a fun loving guy and great to his family, he is sadly missed.
