I knew John Carrillo as I worked at the PD as a secretary. I had also met him while on a ride-along with another officer. I was on duty when the call came in, from a girl reporting domestic violence but did not call back and report that she was safe. Officers Carrillo and Messemer took the call. The next call we received reported that Carrillo was killed. We were all so devastated by this news. Detective Tibbets brought Chamberlain into my office for a statement, but he refused and asked for a lawyer. He appeared so angry that we knew that he would kill us all if he had free hands and a gun. I will never forget that night. There's no way to describe the sick feeling at the department when an officer goes down. Carrillo was a wonderful officer and person.

Hey John,
I cannot believe it has been over 35 years since your life and service were violently cut short.
I remember the day like it was yesterday. I was starting my shift by reading the NCIC Police Blotter when I saw the notification of your death. It hit me like a ton of Bricks. I had just seen you in Albuquerque. I was looking forward to riding with you. In the short time that we were acquainted I knew that you were an awesome person and one who I am very proud to have as a friend and Brother.
I miss you very much and in that short time, you left an impression on me that has remained with me my entire life. I attended your funeral representing the Gallup Police Department with Officer Sam Gomez and his wife Nancy.
I was honored to be there. Through the years I have noticed that when someone you love, value and care for becomes a memory, those people and memories become the treasures of my life.
Rest in Paradise my Brother knowing that you continue to live on in the hearts and minds of those who Love you.

Patrolman (1984-1990)

Time marches on and you are still 26, happy go lucky, and an amazing person to us all.

There are three types of people in this world: sheep, wolves, and sheepdogs. Some people prefer to believe that evil doesn't exist in the world and if it ever darkened their doorstep, they wouldn't know how to protect themselves. Those are the sheep. Then you've got predators, who use violence to prey on the weak. They're the wolves. And then there are those blessed with the gift of aggression, an overpowering need to protect the flock. These men are the rare breed who live to confront the wolf. They are the sheepdog. …You know who you are. You know your purpose.
