Reflections for Motorcycle Patrolman Charles Christopher Caraccilo

I just finished listening to several "war stories" from my dad about the days when he worked patrol with Charles "Chuck" Caraccilo, Foothill Division, 1965. You can only imagine some of the stories from back in those days. My dad retired from LAPD after 30 years. God bless you Officer Caraccilo and your family. Rest in peace.

Policeman Caraccilo - I belive your death scene photo was shown to us in the academy. It made a lasting impression. Thanks for your service to the people of Los Angeles. May God grant you eternal rest and may His perpetual light shine upon you.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the one hundred and thirty-second anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

Rest In Peace.

Chuck left this world to soon.As a young police officer, we spent many cold nights working 16A4, the Sylmar car. Charlie was a good street cop who tried desperately to keep me out of trouble and for that I thank him.Charlie you are always in my thoughts.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I was 10 years old when we lost uncle chuck and I still think of him and how much he taught me about being honest and sincere. He was always smiling and I am sure it was because of his wonderful wife and children. To me he was a true living hero. He rode his police motorcycle like a knight riding a Stallion. He always seemed to have a little smile going and had such a comical good attitude while home from work. He requested me to address him as “Uncle Chuck”. My Father was his close family friend as well as the Godfather of his son Ricky. My father Frank helped Chucks kids cope with the tragedy of loosing their father and months later they’re mother as well. I cried for days and at 10 years of age, I learned the true meaning of heartache and deep loss. We lived in the same neighborhood and I would hang out in his garage while he was working on the boat or just drinking a cold one. He was patient enough to have a 10 year old as a friend. Chuck will never be forgotten by the many friends and fellow officers whom he rode with. With the respect and honor he taught me, I have to say I am a better man for having him in my childhood life. Thank you all for such kind words and for sharing a moment to reflect.

No Officer Caraccilo you have not been forgotten. You were murdered on the day of my graduation from Birmingham High School, here in the Division. Almost every morning or the past year, I pass by your picture and all those whose watch ended at Van Nuys Division.

I have wondered about your story. I know it now and will never forget. I am saddened to know we never met. But rest assured the proud men and women of this station, sworn and civilian, strive to uphold the standards you have set.

Dad,not a day goes by that I don't think of you.Not a day goes by that I don't ask myself if you would be proud of me today. Happy Fathers Day. I also want to thank everyone who has posted a reflection on this site, for taking the time to remember my father. It warms my heart to find that there are still people out there who remember him. God bless and keep you!

You haven't been forgotten Chuck. I have often thought about you and the good times we had together working Foothill Division as 16A32. Occasionally I think back about the "sea stories" we exchanged and the one you told be about the mafiosos from New York you arrested in Hollywood for 211 and how they sabotaged your father's car, thinking it was yours, causing one of the wheels to come off on the freeway. I really liked that one. It may seem silly now, but these are the little things we always seem to remember about our friends. Rest assured, you haven't been forgotten by your brother officers.

Sorry to see that at this point that there was only one other reflection left for Chuck. I was the investigating officer on Chuck's murder and had the great pleasure of knowing him before his death. I also got to know his wife Eileen thereafter and was saddened by her untimely and early death. I have passed on the website to other former colleagues and hope when I return next time to see some additional reflections for this very fine cop.
